I've seen a couple boats that the steering wheel was on the left side or in the center , I know nitro makes some boats where it's dual console but both consoles are in the middle. What's the idea of that and steering on the left?

I would think center console steering is about weight distribution, 360 deck walk around. Left steering would be more about the feel of driving a car. Gambler makes sunken dual center consoles that look bad arse. Would love to fly one.

Can't say I have ever seen a left hand steer bassboat other than a custom Stroker, but Allison and Bullet both make a center steer. Triton made one for a while but discontinued it. I believe anytime a boat builder tries to get serious about performance, they gravitate towards center steer because of the balance and ease of set up with one driver. I like the center steer, but it is not for everyone.

http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/10530850/all/Single_or_Dual_ConsoleSee my comments in this thread... that's what I have, a bayliner cobra 1903, center dual console setup. I am a huge fan of the layout though given the roots, it is implemented rudimentary as expected, not quite as well thought out as the z9 cdc per say. There are a handful of factory boats with such a layout. Old early 90's skeeter model I forget the name of, my bayliner, several nitro boats dating back to the 911 cdc in the late 90's... Allison sorta has a center console layout but not the way it should be. The benefits are so numerous I can't imagine why it isn't the most accepted console/deck layout around... tradition I guess? Conventional good looks? I will admit that the way the Z9 CDC executes it aesthetically is fugly compared to traditional dual console. I think mine is rather sharp looking, kinda speedboat-esque lol. The deck layout of the Z9 CDC is amazing though. Navigating the cockpit is much simpler imo with deck from front to back circumnavigating the dash instead of the walkthrough. IT's definitely a smart layout for multiple anglers on one boat as well. If I were designing one from scratch, it's certainly the layout I'd be working from personally. edit: Stability (mass centralization and symmetry with or without passenger), dry ride increased sitting further inboard you don't take as much spray over gunwales... probably more aerodynamic for what that matters, suppose it becomes important as bass rigs breach 100mph mark and whatnot lol

Skeeter S1700, SK2000... triton 200xp, nitro 911, 929, and z9 CDC, bayliner cobra 1903, I am sure there are others, but if you are interested, that's a short list that covers a broad range of price/performance/options that have a center console layout of some sort.... good luck finding weird boats that weren't built/sold in mass quantities though lol I spent about 2 and a half years tracking mine down before I finally got it haha

Was just curious about it, saw a guy on fork that the steering wheel was on the left and thought it looked funny, seen the dual console in the middle before, also too me that looked strange.

The two manufacturers that have perfected the design and engineering on center console bass boats are Allison and Bullet. Allison has been building center console boats for probably 50 years and I believe still hold the world speed record for a bassboat with a center console boat. Everyone else is pretty much also rans and build a center console boat for a few years and then quit. Allison and Bullet still build them as a specific model in their product line.

I don't know that they perfected anything... they just happen to use that layout and build a fast boat... that says nothing of functionality or fishability for a tournament angler or partners. I sure don't see many pros running them... have seen the Z9 CDC used a good deal, and I'd also say that a near 20 year run of nitro offering CDC layouts is them running them consistently. End of the day, the Allison is a speed boat you can fish from in most peoples opinion, and I can't disagree much with that. Perfected? More like puny imo. lol speedboat performance with bass buster ergonomics, and yacht pricing... no thank you

Center console for speed and weight distribution ease. Single man passes. On the Stroker I believe the console is there because of weight. when the prop is turning the left side is lighter than the right. The prop is lifting the port side. This is my hypothesis.....

Outboards are right hand steer to offset the prop lift. Left hand steer would be a bear to drive and wouldn't stay on pad at high speeds without a ton of ballast weight.
The 20' Allison center steer is the fastest of thier bassboats and should not be compared fish ability wise to other major brands. Now the XB21 Allison is a whole different animal and holds its own fish ability with just about any of them and performer wise and rough water ride kills them all.

A ton of weight to ballast? I mean... I don't know what you weigh.... but given the battery systems required on boats running 24/36V trolling motors... ballasting a drivers weight is a matter of choosing to move the battery compartment(s) accordingly.

The fastest Stroker I ever saw was a left hand steer boat with dual consoles. No ballast, just a driver going around 106mph+. As far as I know, they only made a couple of left hand steer boats. Not really sure why, but they seemed to perform as well as a right hand steer boat. You used to see a lot of left hand steer jet boats back in the day, but that's a whole other topic.

They put them out there. No indication that it improves profitability or market share. Anglers didn't respond by buying them. So they quit making them.
If they had solid sales others would have went that route.
