Dadgum channels are wearing us out but fun stuff!!! Couple ok gills and some nice greens. Final count was little man: 22 cats, he bragged the WHOLE time!!, lil sis: 17 cats 1 gill, 2 greens, and bubba in last place: 2 greens, 1 gill, and 10 cats. Fished the dam with crawlers and floats, fishing 3 ft deep over 12ft water. Red ear?

That's a really nice haul, catching is catching no matter what it is. Always fun to get out and catch some fish with the youth. To answer your Redear question, it isn't a Redear. Redear don't have a black spot at the back of their dorsal and anal fins. Looks more like a Bluegill.

Thanks guys. I know the pics are bad but can anyone see the lesions around the tails of the sunfish? Seems all sunfish in this lake have them and the creek gills from down the road don't, none of the cats had them either. Any tips to keep them from swallowing the #6 hooks? Had some casualties the last few trips that became catfish bait that I would have preferred to release. Bigger hooks maybe? I tell the kids to be quick on the hookset, but still happens. My daughter really don't like when they bleed and can't stand her perch being catfish food, haha.

Nice going with the kiddos!
The only thing I have found to help remedy them swallowing the hook is pinching the barb down flat with pliers or removing the barb all together. You will get some shake off but the hook is easy to remove. If you use too big of a hook it will be harder to get hook ups. They like to eat and love night crawlers and swallow them pretty quick as you know.
I have a pond full of blue gill and perch. When kids come and fish with night crawlers we pinch the barbs and it helps a lot.

As soon as you feel the bite or see your line tense or slag up set the hook. Quick hook sets will prevent a lot of hook swallowing.

One more things. With the kiddos it will be a learning experience on hook sets. You will experience a lot of hook swallowing fish with young anglers learning how to fish!

He crosses their eyes quick. My daughter isn't as focused sometimes and it shows, she has them swallow it. I'll work on quick hook sets with them. Thanks fellas

Those young ones are getting it down pretty good. Nice fish and a super job. Side Note: Quicker hook sets will help out and prevent some hook swallowing.
