My first thought was a bowfin, but it didn't have teeth the mouth was like a bass - rough pad
.

Old guy I knew called those dogfish.

Which I looked up and "dogfish" is another name for bowfin.

Not sure why not teeth, maybe he did not floss? Pretty sure thats a bowfin though.

Son's friend caught it on an H&H.. I didn't see it in person, but my first thought was bowfin (grindle,dogfish)but the lack of teeth seemed odd.

That is a bowfin. The short anal fin is proof. Only young males exhibit the "eye spot". 100% certain.
