Been doing it for years. I can also add, if you are hitting bottom, when you pause it, use the rod tip and act like you are ripping the bait loose and that causes VIOLENT strikes as well. I agree with him on the longer the rod, but I do prefer a slower retrieve reel, in the 4.7:1 to a 5.2:1 retrieve ratio. Recovering about 20" per reel handle turn while the 6.3:1 gets about 25-27 inches per reel handle turn. Just different things for different people. To each his own. Hope this helps. I'm with you 100% Thad, I was always taught fishing deep diving crankbaits to use a slower gear ratio reel. Mine is a 5.2.1 with the 8' Dobyns rod, couldn't be happier.
