Figuring out this catfishing thing. I'm new so be kind, bass fisher by trade haha.

Is this about right? I was super tempted to use my hands to mold this onto the hook but I refrained and followed instructions.

Caught two turtles at my local pond and nothing else. Fished the same pond, same spot a week ago today, same time of day (noon-130pm) and had 4 channels on raw gulf shrimp.

My first time trying punch bait. Any tips are welcome.

Coop, If you don't mind a little stink on your fingers mold the bait a little tighter on the hook with your fingers It helps in hot weather.

Good tip!

I felt like since everything I've read about "punch" baits suggested not touching it... I would refrain lol

We fished for cats and stripers on Lake Mead with frozen anchoveys and if you touched them; it was 5 showers and 10 hand washings till the smell left you.

Don't listen to him. Your hands will stink for a week if you get that stuff on there. I grab the treble hook with an old pair of pliers and make circles in the bait. The fibers will wrap around the hook and stay on just fine w/o compromising your hands. That stuff will gag a maggot and I don't want that on me. All I use for channels now is cheese bait that you can find on this forum that doesn't stink so that you can mold it with your hands.

That's how your supposed to do it. No need to touch it with your hands.

I've always pushed it down with a stick and pull it out at an angle, the way it comes out is how I use it

Great for chapped lips as well (it keeps you from licking them after application).

If it is wet, I have always used cattails or dryer lint.

Hey serious thanks for the tips. Might get out again today and try again.

Sucks I'm only free at midday but I know they'll bite even then.

I've got a perfect pair of old needle nose pliers to try "swirlling" the hook in the bait.
