Hi everyone, I am would like to start kayak fishing and am looking for a decent setup for a low price. I was wondering what a good starter kayak would be if I want to paddle to the oil rigs off of Port A with a few friends and do some king fishing. I'm looking for something around 10 feet in length, and would appreciate any tips you guys could give me.
Thanks!

No starter. You need a real one and someone who knows the saltwater.

Keep em tight!

You do not want a 10' kayak for off shore fishing or at least IMO it wouldn't be a good idea. I have a 10' yak and it was okay for bay fishing this year but I wouldn't feel comfortable as SAFE being off shore in it.

I strongly advise that you go with a group of veterans on your first trips. Fishing in open water should not be taken lightly

10' starter kayaks are for little lakes and creeks. People who try to go off shore (or even in a big lake) in a kayak not made for big warer put their lives at risk. It cannot be overstated how dangerous it is to go out on big water ill equipped. I personally have known 3 people who have died because they thought they knew what they were doing but were unprepared for what mother nature threw at them.. 2 in the gulf and one in twok.

I totally agree with the others. Offshore isnt for the inexpieranced. I have caught sharks in the same area and been towed 5 plus miles. That coupled with not knowing how to deal with big fish at the side of your yak...dangerous. not saying never do it...just saying get a couple years of time on the water first.

Thanks for all your responses everyone, I guess I'll just get a decent kayak and stick to the bay. I appreciate everyone's advice.

Those were some interesting responses to your inquiry. Obviously there are many dangers involved in the open ocean. My advice would not be to put the fear of God into you about the concept, but to do your research and learn what you can. Then ease into it. You can catch kings closer to shore without having to go miles out. Take it slow and learn as you go. Always err on the side of caution and there is obviously safety in numbers.

As for the size of the kayak I would think something at least 12 feet would track a lot better in the water. My cousin has a little Malibu X-Factor. It is designed for the surf and would be safe. The only problem is that it is short, so turns a bit with each paddle. Therefore, it doesn't go through the water in a straight line which means a lot of extra work. For that reason he keeps in close to shore and does not try to make it out to the rigs. Don't give up on your dream. Just work your way there carefully.

here is some additional info for u & anyone else that might care to know:

Gas rigs are the smaller rigs u see near the coast. These r what u see yak anglers "paddling or peddling" out to.
Most BTB anglers do not "OFFSHORE" fish. BTB means water beyond the surf zone. So, 50-75 is BTB. 1+ miles would be offshore.
Kings can be & r often caught BTB. folks also catch them off the jetties & piers in aqua to clear colored water. I witnessed one being caught in the surf. But, the water was beautiful that day. Just about any length yak can be used for running baits out from the beach on smooth days. 12.5' plus kayaks are whats typically used for BTB. OFFSHORE yaks are usually 13.5-16' generally speaking. A good fitting bright colored paddlers jacket, VHF Radio, & flares & whistle should be with you before you attempt OFFSHORE fishing. BTB fishing can be done with lesser but not advised. Dont be the weak link or least adjudicated guy on the water. Do your homework & prep well b4 you head out with others so that they r safe fishing with you also. Ask lots of questions. Youtube BTB setup, Offshore kayak setup, BTB kayak and extreme kayak fishing. some guys just make it look easy. u should plan for the worst, prep well & ease into it. know your vessels limits as well as your own. BTB fishing is a blast! Offshore fishing is extreme!

Sharkinator and Fish Zombie both have some great advice that I whole heartedly agree with. I have paddled smaller boats BTB up to about 7-800 yards off the beach. It is far more tiring and can be a little hairy if the swell gets bad. Another thing to do is practice manuevers that you may need while BTB such as deep water re-entry and practice going in and out of the surf zone. Flipping your yak and re-entering in 15+ feet of water can be very challenging and exhausting if you don't know what you are doing, and is a must have skill if you are considering going out. I have rolled several kayaks BTB, and even having re-entered many times, it can be VERY hard if you are worn out already. Do your research and practice these skills and it will make trips in the big pond safe and extremely fun! A good place to practice would be in a pond or calm lake near shore where it is just deep enough you can't touch bottom. Good luck, and let us know what kayak you end up getting!

Definitely, DEFINITELY gain experience and become comfortable fighting fish from a kayak inshore before going offshore. It is not a place to learn the ropes.

Having said that, this shark fishing video I produced has some good tips for fighting big game from a kayak safely (i.e. staying above water) if you want to check it out.

Yep, Robert has the video of his baptism to offshore kayak fishing!
