Hello All,

I just got into the Fly Fishing and exited to get out with my new setup/flies.

In a nutshell, I will be fishing in our local area lakes/creeks with a 5wt rod/reel outfit. Primarily fishing for pan fish/bass with a variety of wooly buggers. (Pretty simple setup so far huh?)

I thought it was as simple as tie it on the line and get it out there but I understand you may want to "dress" a fly before and during an outing.

I understand that there are these liquid/powder applications that you need to put on your fly to keep it afloat longer.

Not wanting to get into a lot of fly fishing technicalities this early in the game, I'm looking for a basic all-around product and some of your own personal tips to apply it.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Oh, and if you're willing to entertain a rookie on a local outing, please count me in!

Ditto. Do yourself a favor and get to some casting lessons. You will learn more there than we have opinions. If it works for you use it, carful with cheve vs. ford or TFO VS. others. Simply TFO is way to go popcorn lol.

What do you consider local?

Of course! I'm not trying to start the Chevy/Ford thing. Believe it or not, I had a TFO outfit in my cart this weekend and decided on another off of a recommendation. However, I know TFO and I will cross paths soon enough!

Check out the Dallas Fly Fishers. They have outings often and their members can help you to shorten the learning curve.

Sept 19, Texoma on the Fly will be held at Eisenhower state park on Lake Texoma. It is a free learn to fly fish style event.

Go to Walmart and purchase some Betts Fancy poppers. Pan fish love them. Yellow/Chartreuse color is my favorite for pan fish. The slightly larger white one with red dots has worked well for me on small bass up to 19 inches. I often use them to search for pan fish. Then i will switch over to a subsurface fly to find the bigger fish. Briminators are my favorite flies for subsurface pan fishing. I like flies such as these and clousers because they ride hook up. Far less snags, especially when creek fishing.

Regarding your question.

Check this out: http://troutster.com/fly-floatant-test/

I have the Shimizake Poweder they rated so highly.
It works great as a floatant, not super practical IMHO though.
It turns all your flies bright white and leaves a big slick.
Great for visibility and flotation, but no so sure for attracting.

J-Moe- Yes! I will absolutely pick up some Fancy Poppers!

With those Briminators, do you you still use a floating fly line or do you use a sinking tip?

Thanks for the tips!

Awesome! I will look up Dallas Fly Fishers for some skills training.

Eisenhower is a nice state park. I'll put it on our calendar!

All my rods have wf floating fly line. I usually use 4 lb. mono or 6 lb. fluorocarbon tippets when fishing subsurface flies. I use 6 or 8 lb. mono tippets when fishing poppers as mono will float and fluorocarbon sinks.

I caught 4 bass on the popper in about 45 minutes this morning. Lost 2 big ones. One got down in the weeds after a long fight. The other actually straightened out the hook. Love those Betts Fancy poppers.
