J-Moe's post about making tapered leaders re-kindled a desire of my own. I want to learn to make my own furled leaders. I like furled leaders. I've looked on the internet and there are a couple of dozen how-to sets of instructions - and not one of them seems to be clearly written.

So, I'm asking if anyone can point me to a set of instructions that are clear enough for a total novice at furled leader making to be able to follow - and any advice you experienced furled leader makers might have to share...

Thanks!

Here's the article that got me started: Furled Leaders by Henk
I use a drill motor to wind both ways as I am too lazy to wait on the lead weights and the spin/unspin. Just get a big old screw hook to chuck into the drill. Oh, and Google the Shorb Loop for some ease in putting the loops in at each end. Having loops makes life soooo much simpler. Heck, here's the link Shorb Loop

The strongest leaders ever.. are made from braided line.. These leaders are not a specific taper or formula and mostly I use them for bass fishing. Honestly you only need one because these leaders if built right will outlast all the other components of the fly pole.

My issue with furled leaders is with trying to straighten them back out after getting hung up. I get hung up a lot.
Pulling on them stretches them out. When they snap back, they tend to re-furl in unintended places. Then you have to re-stretch them to get them to go back right.

Never had one fail and they tune over very well.

Zippy,
I first saw that described on FAOL about 5 years ago. I had forgotten about it. I'll give it a try, just for snits and grims. grin
Gotta get some 6 lb mono to try it with. Lightest I have now is 12 lb. A 24 lb by 48 lb leaders might be a *little* heavy for 6" panfish, lol.

Craxy4,
The 12lb is good to practice with at first. After your done give it to one of your striper/hybrid guys. Here is some of what I have learned in doing this, hope it helps. I use P-line fluro coated co-poly for most of mine unless I need some sink on the leader like with a Clouser, then I will make the leader out of all fluro. The tag ends have a tendency to back twist while furling the line and this can be frustrating at first. To prevent it find a creative way to separate the tag ends during the building process. I use the cushion of an arm chair. This gives tension to the tags and minimizes the back twist. Second, where you make the final knot makes a difference in the turn over. I'm certain you know why.

I'll play with it a little today while I'm watching the xfinity race.
Fun part is going to be working out the length. I prefer a longer, 9'-ish leader. By my calculations, that's about 30' of string hammer Aught to be fun! laugh
