Fishing is good for small whiting and croakers, maybe doe hardheads but despite what people say in this site, I have always had a really hard time catching redfish and trout and other game fish in the surf or anywhere else I try. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

I can't give exact spots wading on Surfside, but it's CRAZY good right now. I saw 2 guys with a total of 17 specks up to 25" early Saturday, on artificials. I haven't limited yet but catch 5 - 7 every time out throwing little jigs, caught 5 nice specks, 1 Spanish mackerel, a big lady fish and countless under size specks and reds wading last night in 2 hours after work.

I talked with a guy Sunday who said 4 or 5 guys limited on specks on live shrimp under a cork right beside him. He went fishless throwing live finger mullet and perch.

The water was blue and green all weekend, still green last night. I waded Saturday afternoon in that 15 mph NE wind, it was 3 to 4 foot rollers that would lift and set me back several feet every time. I got knocked off my feet and rolled in the waves twice, lost a pocket knife and had to chase my hat and sunglasses multiple times. I lost 5 on my first 5 casts, 2 I saw were very big. It was a rodeo, but ended up with 5 specks in the 17-19" range.

This is new to me, if it gets better in September I'm not sure what that's gonna be like! grin

This gives me hope. We are going with the family next week, and will stay the whole week there. Planning on fishing the surf with the kids, so no big hopes, but will try to wade of hit the jetties early morning or late at night after they are in bed.

Any recs? got some Gulp! shrimp, little jigs, yozuri minnows, topwater, spoons. And the proverbial fishbites, could always buy some dead or live shrimp too.

You are dead on with saying 'no big hopes.' The surf has been hard to catch fish in lately, except for the occasional days with blue-green water and light easterly winds. The 3 times I have been there in the past month the water was rough and muddy and I had not much luck (although I only fish artificials). There are guys catching stuff here and there, mostly the guys who know the surf and area real well, but overall it has been slow. A good rig for the surf is live shrimp or freshly dead shrimp under a popping cork. Should be able to catch something (e.g. catfish, croaker etc.) and the bites come fast-including real small ones. Artificials to me are fun to fish but less reliable in these conditions. Best of luck, and hope for good weather with low wind. Let us know how you do.
