Hey guys,

I am taking my family on a business trip to Corpus and will have a few hours this week for some beach time. My 8 year old wants to take his fishing gear to catch something from the ocean. It has been years since I have wade or pier fished and wondered if anyone had a tip or two that might help me get this bucket item checked for him.

Any advice, bait, technique recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I have spent the past 50 years spitting in their mouths...increasing the size of Texas fish with every spit!

You picked a good time to come fishing down here - trout fishing has been good to excellent and some bull reds are stating to make their move in the back bays.

What part of CC & when will you be down there? All factors considered, I'd park your buddy on the Bob Hall pier (early before sunrise) or late, (6 pm til he's too tired to fish) and fish the the second/third gut with shrimp flavored Fishbites on the bottom. Should catch a bunch of solid Whiting, possibility of other fish as well, drum, (R&D), Pompano, etc

Surf looks to be be building a bit as the week moves on, so the pier would be better than getting knocked around in the surf.

Second idea would be fishing the lights at the Oso pier if its still up and running. Get a few glow in the dark shrimp plastics and fish the lights until he's tired. May not catch many keeper trout, but should catch a bunch of trout. Don't buy live shrimp, don't need it there.
What type gear does he/you have?

We were there this past weekend, lots of kids in the surf catching whiting on fishbites near Bob Hall. I had luck by the Causeway under the lights. Totaled 5 flounder, and 15+ speckled trout (9 keepers). Speck killers and H&H popping cork rigged seemed to be the ticket. Good luck!

Lift strong, and prosper.
