I bought a kayak not too long ago and I first got to take it out last night.. it was kinda shaky and I can't imagine getting ahold of a big cat in one of those! Is it something I'll get used to as I practice more or is it just the kayak that's unstable? It's also pretty spooky being out in the middle of water thinking you're about to tip... it probably would've been less scary if I wouldn't have tried it with my cousin at 11:30 last night. I plan on running jug lines and trot lines out of it and fishing from it occasionally. What are some good rod holders that I could put close to where I sit down cause I don't like reaching up to the very front into the crate..it gets a little shaky.

What brand/model kayak? Some are more stable than others and it does get better with time.

Remember the first time you rode a bike? It's kinda like that. Wobbly and uneasy. It gets better, although Bert is right. Some kayaks are just less stable, and the closer you get to the weight capacity of a kayak, the less stable it may end up being.

As for rod holders, I like the Scotty brand, they're pretty cheap and they make a bunch of different types you can plug into the mount. Once you pick a rod hold, sit in your kayak with your paddle.

Move your rod holder around, maybe even with a fishing rod in it, and make sure it's not in the way.

Good luck!

That kayak has a weight limit of 275# which would be ok if you are about half that weight.
If you are larger than that then stability would be an issue.
That said, getting used to a kayak takes a few minutes until you discover you aren't going to flip over.

Just one more cast!

I thought the same thing about the stability of my kayak when I first got it on the water. I thought I was going to tip it. After a few hours on the water i started getting more comfortable. I learned how I can turn to grab stuff behind my seat which I was scared to do before. I can also reach the front of my kayak if I need.
There's a learning curve there and experience is the easiest way. Go out with other people that have been on kayaks for a while and you will learn even faster. That's what I did and now I'm comfortable enough to go out on my own when I want. Always remember to stay safe and wear a PFD.

Stability is a crutch. Lol jk, but really practice will aid in that area. But like others said depending on your weight it could severely effect the performance of the kayak.

2 things that will help a lot, remember where your head goes the rest of the body follows so you always try to keep your head in center of the yak the other thing is take everything off of it take it out and intentionally flip it just so you have a feel for it's breaking point, plus it gives you an excuse to practice reentry

Depends on the kayak. Don't know much about yours, but I think you've gotten responses to most of your questions. I would offer this: tipping in a kayak isn't a big deal, as long as 1. everything important is tethered; 2.you're wearing a PFD; 3. you are in shallow water; or 4. You've practiced deep water re-entry in your current 'yak.
