I hit Wheeler Branch yesterday and fished from 7 AM to 1 PM and then came off the water. Best clue to my review of my new kayak? I bought two pairs of those cam paddle locks and mounted my two part double-bladed paddle on the opposing stern tracks, blades back. And, I never used them, not once. Pretty cool.

For those familiar with the lake, I sat out on the dam side of the rock island, caught about 8 or so fish, all small but two, lost a few better ones -- one jumped off, the other broke my line off at the kayak. I was able to hold position the entire time using reverse to back up on occasion.

They were letting water in via the inlet and some policemen were having an event at the large pavilion and I set out there and worked back and forth along the line between the swim platform to the point close to the swim dock. I just ran up and down the veggie line there using forward and reverse. I caught 2 larger bass there.

Finally, I fished from the low retaining wall near the dam down to the boat ramp and caught 2 there for a nice day, best I have had on Wheeler in months.

I found a trick that would work well for Hobies and Propels, anything that peddles. I found that if I wanted to cross water, longer distances, that instead of fine tuning direction with the rudder lever and not sort of drift a bit off course and make adjustments, that if I purposely put my line about 1 or 2 degrees off, for me to the left side of where I want to go, that I could leave the rudder lever completely alone . . . by holding one of those hand paddles in my right hand and drop it over the side where it would quickly pulse me back to my visual target. This "hand ruddering" is much more accurate, at least for me peddling along in a 10' boat that is 34" wide. Larger boats with different hull designs likely have much more accurate tracking, less yaw. I put the small hand paddle behind my seat, easy to grab, easy to store.

The reason to want the vessel to pull only to one direction off of a straight line? So, that you are always making the adjustment with the hand rudder from one side. That way, you don't have to pass the paddle back and forth to different sides.

I learned one more "trick" to peddle faster. I'll share that with other Propel owners another time.

Anyway, my primary double bladed paddle never made it out of the clips . . . until I put them in the truck to head home.

Third time out, even better. I keep learning the little nuances of kayak positioning control with the reverse capability.

Today, I experimented putting my bow into the wind, cast forward into it and using forward peddling to control my position. Not bad and I liked it. Then, I my back to the wind, cast with the wind and used reverse to hold or even pull me back. Finally, I tried some casts off to the right then set my rudder for a hard right turn and did sort of tight circles.

More to learn!

I'll take a look . . . it shows to not be available yet but I'll monitor it and watch it.

Louise and I are building a home on Lake Athens so I'll soon be kayaking new bodies of water. In addition to Lake Athens these are close by:

Purtis Creek
Tawakoni
Palestine
Fork
Tyler

Too many others to even count but I'll have lots of fun checking the all out.

The stability and weight of the 10 are AWESOME. I couldn't believe I was able to stand on the nose and not flip or tip over, if I had a rod in my hand I probably could have made some casts!
