I posted elsewhere that I had a great day at Wheeler Branch, the best in months for me. But, I lost one or two nice fish in particular when they burst out of the water about 18" in the air and flung off the hook.

You know how they do: run around deep, then your line starts making that motion toward the surface and out they pop, with leverage, to break off.

Does anyone have a technique they employ when they feel it coming?

Would it help to reel in extra hard and fast to neutralize the jump?

One trick I thought was cool was Bill Wilcox showing how he alters some of his lures so the body falls away and the fish has no weighted object to use as a lever to knock the hook loose. I had never seen that before.

If you are fishing for money I'd put the rod tip far into the water and keep as much pressure on the fish as you can . If fishing for fun I encourage the fish to jump a lot . Big fun . That's why smallies are the best

gotta get their head turned down, takes a lot of practice. its almost like dragging them right before they go to the air if that makes any sense.

What these guys said is right. Gotta get that head turned down before they get to the surface. IT is not easy

Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, or how you do it.

Honestly, I kneel on the deck and shove the rod in the water deep... It makes it easy to keep them down unless they are way away from the boat but still your best bet. Standing on deck and holding a rod up your are physically pointing them up above waterline essentially anyways, I don't think they intend to jump as much as we guide them to in many instances.

This! I like to see them juimp but when there is money on the line I'll shove the rod down in the water all the way to the reel if I have to, that will generally keep them bellow the surface. I won't let them surface until I feel them not struggling so much.......and straight into the boat from there.

Eric,

I love to see them jump, too!

Just hate to lose them.

Dropping the rod down in the water makes so much sense: One has a fish on the other end of the line at, say a 45 deg. angle and if the fish is swimming away from the pressure, that is, out and or deeper, it feels more pressure since the fisherman and fish are both pulling in opposite directions. If it swims up, it feels less pressure and I suppose that reinforces the idea that it is going in the right direction.

Next thing you know, boom, the fish is flying.

Why didn't I think of this? I appreciate the advice!

I'll see if I can learn the technique.

Brad

Rod tip down and reel quickly as you see your line rising

first off, if you have them hooked in the best location, the roof of the mouth, they are not coming off anyway. next, with me, a bass that wants to come to the surface has made a bad mistake. you have to anticipate and get the head turned over to you and ski them the rest of the way to the boat. very easy to do with practice.

As soon as I see that line almost go limp, I immediately stick my rod in the water. You can kinda see your line slack and then start going away from you as that fish starts surfacing for a jump. Always keep an eye on that line!
