So I've always heard that live bullheads make excellent bait for flatheads. My question is this, do they work for blues as well? And if so, would they work cut up into pieces?

Any info would be great appreciated.

I haven't caught anything on bullhead and have used them several times. In my experience live perch is hard to beat.

My thoughts exactly. Live perch are great flathead and bluecat bait . This time of year I usually just throw them on ice and use for cut bait unless I'm planning on targeting flatties . Never a bad idea to keep them alive though .

They work good cut or live. I have had better luck with the smaller ones for live bait 4-5 inches and cut up the bigger ones.

Are they your go to bait over perch and other live bait? Have you fished them along side other baits and bullhead was better?

Trying to figure out why they haven't produced for me at all.

I almost always use bluegill but I found a creek near my place that has bullheads and was curious about them for blues. I might try them along side bluegill on Saturday.

I have fished them side by side in the past with live perch and both produced fish. I wouldn't say either one is better than the other. I do however prefer using them for cut bait over cut perch. My go to bait day in and day out is shad. I have not found a bait, natural or man made, that will out fish shad on a regular basis for blue cat.

When I trot lined, small bullheads were my preferred bait.

Bullheads will stay alive forever and then some. The only thing I hate about bullheads as bait is that you will always get finned, without fail.

Snip the fins off with wire cutters before you ever try to take them off your hook. thumb

It's funny yall mentioned that, I got stuck yesterday... bad. Went about 3/4" - 1" in. Think it hit bone. Right in between my index finger and thumb. Couldn't grip anything all night. Still hurts.

I got my revenge though, chopped him in half and cut off all the fins

I agree with Dawson! Eat the bigger bullheads. My family prefers them over other catfish.I personally have had more luck with sunfish"Perch,"and goldfish than bullheads. That being said give the smaller bullheads a try. They might work well where you are fishing???

I would think that side by side, a big old flat head might go for a sunfish first... reason being what yall talked about, getting finned ha ha.

Old Mr. Flathead most likely does not like it anymore then we do!
