I have plenty of tackle and passion for paying my dues to find my own spots.. My patients is wearing thin.. Is there anybody out there willing to help me out on a spot that produces reds n trouts.. Not trying to take anybodies spots, Im only down there once a month.. I just want to catch fish when I go!!!! Anything helps???

What kind of boat?
How are you fishing?
It's on right now if you give it a chance.

Don't know about slinging bait, but it's pretty easy right now catching on hardware.

If you've got tide moving, the cuts, passes and reefs are holding a lot of trout, we use hogie super minnow in pumpkin/chartreuse when it's cloudy, red/white when the suns out. 1/8 oz oldham head.

If you're not seeing water moving, get in the back lakes with your topwater, same hogie, or sand eel, lot's of redfish herds moving around right now, but you'll need to get really shallow to get after them.

Wading the grassline/potholes on the south shore of Matagorda is producing, look for points or other bottom feature that look interesting. I don't beg fish to bite, or do I sit around long waiting on them.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll give some of this new knowledge to the water soon. Another question, is it best to fish like u hunt? do a morning fish, then a night fish? Or does it matter if I fish the whole day with out wasting gas through out the day... More or less do they have feeding times like hunting?

Also how can u really tell if the tides are in or not? I can obviuosly tell if water is up or down but aside NOAA charts which confusing as [censored] so how can u tell? is there a good rule of thumb on time to hit the water or time to go dock at night? Or is it a dumb question and stick to dawn and dusk?

need to get you a good tide chart app for your phone. You'll be doing yourself a favor by learning the tides and watching the moonrise\set times.
We like fishing the falling tides, the fish back off the flats and into the guts waiting on the bait fish to funnel by.
It can be a lot like hunting. Game will be more active around major\minor periods of time than other times.

Look down. Is the water moving? That's all I know what to do. Get in a cut or pass and it moves faster.

The water in the middle of the bay is junk right now. Reefs and cuts are junk.

That makes a whole lot of sense Pat. I was there a couple weeks ago and it didn't produce nothing but junk.. I'm glad u said that because that makes me feel better the last time I fished the middle bay cuz I couldn't land anything wading..

I've read a lot of reviews on DOA baits, What do you think? Are they any different then any other?

I don't use them, and nobody every wore me out using them.
My selection is pretty basic.
Hogie super minnow: pumpkin/chart. Red/White plum/chart.
Norton original sand eel: tequila/chart baffin magic
Tsunami spook topwater
weedless spoon
chatter bait when you sometimes gotta wake em up.

Never had anyone pull out anything that ever worked better than any of those, but lures are all about confidence, if you think they're working, they will.

I know yesterday, they turned on to red/white and by gosh that's what they wanted far above any other toys thrown at em, so let the fish tell you what they want.

That last statement couldn't be any more real...( let the fish tell u what they want ) I'm gonna give your Hogie super minnow a whirl for sure.. I remember that u saying that a couple times so the fish must like it at some point.. tks for the info buddy I really do appreciate it..

I am really wanting to become a better fisherman in the bay system and your helping me out a ton. tks again.

Go out at Army cut and the spots on your right and left are going to be good ones. Shoalwater Bay is producing some nice reds with long drifts and sight casting. Water clarity is great for now. Just watch the tides, it's about 1-2 foot on high tide and goes out pretty quick when tides start to fall out. The flat out in front of shoreline by Army Hole down to about Pringle entrance is doing well for trout early am. Catching on shrimp popper cork and gulp shrimp popper. Here they are eating spoons there too.
