I have a friend who is looking to buy a new sonar/GPS combo. He wants the best bang for the buck. He has it narrowed down to a HB 899 or a Garmin. The HB has a 7" screen and the Garmin a 9" but it cost $200 more. I've never even seen a Garmin so really can't make a comment. Does anyone have a comment. Please keep it to these two units, because he has had bad luck with Lowrance and refuse to even consider one.

If the Garmin has the same sonar technologies as the HB without buying extra stuff to match it, $200 more for a larger display is a good deal.
BUT Only Garmin maps can be used, so check for the coverage needed before making the purchase.
The Humminbird can use Lakemaster and Navionics mapping.

If Garmin mapping covers the right lakes, then go Garmin all the way.

I would go Humminbird all the way. There are more and a lot better mapping options available for fresh water for sure and cant beat the ease of use of the Humminbird, not to mention the quality.
