I'm considering a trip to the lighthouse lakes next week! Thing is, I don't have any lures or terminal gear for chasing trout and reds. Any advice on what to buy that could cover the various conditions I might encounter? I have some striper and bass lures that may work too but would rather get advice than to guess!

I'll be fishing from my kayak and plan to wade as well.

spinner baits, rattle traps, buzz baits and tops will all work. gulp shrimp on a jighead is good also.

There is another lure that no one has mentioned that is inexpensive and that I have caught many species of fish on including trout, reds, flounder, spanish mackeral, jack crevalle, ladyfish, and others. That is either a Johnson Sprite, or weedless Johson Silver minnow spoon. Comes in gold and silver and both colors produce. I recommend the weedless in the flats.

Limited out on speckled trout in 1hr on a bone super spook jr.I was fishing the canals by jfk early around 5:30am to 6:30am.

Saltwater assassins or gulps. Big thing here is you must use a light jig head and rig it weedless.

Any small topwater that walk the dog will catch reds and trout. A lot of your bass gear will catch reds and trout. You may have to replace the hardware (split rings and hooks will rust and you'll upgrade to tinned VMC trebles and a slightly better no3 stainless split ring).

Can't beat small spooks like the super spook junior in bone, shrome, or silver or something natural looking like a perch, crappie, or leopard frog. The fish have not gotten the memo on what it's 'not suppose to look like'. Ribbits are good during the low tides when it's grassy. So are weedless spoons and even spinner baits with a paddle tail or curl tail will work if there is just a little water over the grass. Natural colors like olive, watermelon, pumpkinseed etc. work great.. so do pearl and bone. Keep it simple and focus more on finding the fish and understanding how to weed out unproductive water before you go so that while you're on the water you focus on smaller areas that concentrate more fish . Learn to read the signs of fish and predator prey interactions, and learn how current and tide change throw the day.
