17-20 I've had smaller line broken too many times. That initial hit and run seems to be 3 or 4 times their weight. 10-12 lb. on my sand bass rigs.

I use 12 lb test mono. I dont get broke off unless rocks or stumps are involved. change line often.
Keep em tight!

I was fishing the bank at Lavon for sand bass with 12 lb mono tandem slab and jig second double broke me off like it was nothing. So I switched to 30lb braid no problems. This is my first year really targeting whites so I was quite surprised how strong they were I thought 12lb mono was over kill.... I guess if your drag is set right 12 lb would be fine though. Never caught a hybrid before but I could guess my 30lb braid would do the trick just fine.

I use 14 lb Vicious brand line which is a co-polymer line. Offers plenty of strength and less line stretch. With Mono I am changing lines often mainly because of line stretch issues where the line starts wrapping around itself. I like using in-line spinners like Mepps alot and a lighter line seems to work better. Sometimes I'll even go to a 10 lb Vicious brand when using lighter lures. Works great for Hybrids, Stripers, Whites, occasional Cats etc. I buy it in bulk and it ends up being pretty economical. For those interested: Vicious Fishing

12 or 14 with excellent knots and retie often . If you are too lazy to retie , or tie bad knots , 15 to 20 , anything over 20 is overkill for hybrids . good luck
