Going to upgrade my console fish finder and transom mounted transducer, once I get it set up can I play with the system on in the garage to familiarize myself with it, or should I wait until I get it on the lake? Heard transducer should not be on and out of the water...thanks in advance.

Most likely want be problem, If you get a hbird they can be turned off, (other brands may have that option as well) or you can set it up to where you can disconnect the transducer cable from the unit till you are on the water

Theres an option to turn off sonar.
Just hit power button / sonar off

It does no harm to run it out of the water. I can't count the number of times I've forgotten to turn my various units off through the years, when on the trailer or on my boat lift. It will drain the battery after a few days though.
