Got a new Xi5 80lb on my 19ft F/S and it works fantastic, except I think speed is slower than it should be. And here is my issue...

The battery indicator light is always red even though both batteries are charged. Figured OK bad battery. Bought 2 brand new deep cycle marine batteries. Same issue.

This got me to thinking about my wiring.

Original setup in boat has 2 sets of cables, one from each battery. From there they join a 24v junction box up front. Into that the Xi5 is wired into a 24v plug.

Could that be my problem? Do these batteries need to be run in a series instead of individually for this thing to use 24v of power? Would that be why the battery is always showing red, as it thinks only one battery is hooked up?

Below is a crude tablet drawing of my current setup.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the time!

Check your voltage at your plug for 24 volts.

As Gman said, check for 24v. I'm not sure if the 24v model would even run on 12v but it might be possible that somehow you are running the 2 batteries in parallel when they need to be in series.

If, in fact your diagram is correct, you have the batteries connected in parallel so you are feeding your tm with 12volts. BUT, I don't know what the yellow box in your diagram does to the wiring.
Series wiring would solve your problem.

The batteries have to be connected in series to provide 24V and there should be two cables going to the trolling motor, one with 24V on it and the other one ground. I'm assuming the yellow junction box is where the trolling motor leads connect to the power cables. The leads from both batteries should not connect there. If you don't have 24V between the two wires at the trolling motor plug, you are wired wrong.

I'm guessing your junction block is actually the back side of a 4 prong plug. If that is the case, the trollingmotor side plug has 3 locations for wiring. a ground connection marked with a " - " sign, then one marked "12" and one marked "24". The "24" is opposite the jumper strip. If this is the plug configuration you have, make sure you're using the black trolling motor plug and not the red plug.

Thanks for the replies.

So after reading and testing, here's what I have:

Yes the yellow box is the back side of a plug. It has leads from both batteries going into it.

I have two wires on trolling motor plug, one black with red stripe and one all black. The red stripe is plugged into the "24" as indicated on the plug. The all black is connected to the "-". The 2 12v ones are left empty. This is the black plug from marinco bought at academy.

With a multimeter, the socket reads only 12v. Same with plug. each battery as well.

I had this idea that this box put out the 24v by joining the two batteries together. I didn't realize I had to run in series to get the 24v.

Am I missing something with this 4 prong plug setup or do I just need to remove all these wires and plugs and run a 24v system in series?

I liked the idea of parallel batteries as I have no room for a 4th battery and didn't want to run the finders off of the main boat battery.

Thanks for the time!

If it were me, I would do away with the box and simply wire the batteries in series, less stuff to go wrong. Use a big wire, at least #6 for optimum current flow. You probably already know this but just in case, to wire the batteries in series, connect the + from one of your batteries to the - of the other one. Now you have 2 terminals left for 24v, + and - posts. You will need to look at your charger manual on how to hook up your charger.

This is about the most simplistic drawing of a 12/24 setup I did for a guy some time ago. Do the wiring at the batteries and eliminate the J-box wire directly to the plug. As many splices or connections you can eliminate the better off you will be.

Thanks everyone. I decided to just pull all the old wiring and run it in a series.

I went to Academy looking for a new plug and all they had was a 2 wire plug and socket that said 12 volts on it. It is made with 8ga wire. There are no breakers or fuses or anything else connected to it.

Why could 8 ga wire only run a 12 volt system? Couldn't these same wires run 24 volts? I thought maybe it said 12 volts only because there were 2 wires instead of 4, but wanted to check before I got this and hooked them up.

8 ga would probably be ok. Some boats come wired with that anyway. I just said 6 ga because of less heat and losses.

The gauge of the wire needed is determined by the amp draw and the length of the wire run, both positive and negative, not voltage. DC doesn't care about voltage. There are many charts online that help you do this. The trolling motor wiring is usually selected for a 5% voltage drop, but 3% is better, and most trolling motor manuals are going to recommend #6. You also need to use wire that is rated AWG. A lot of the boat builders are using SAE wire because of cost which can be 12-18% smaller than is's counterpart in AWG and is carries less current and has more heat loss. No one ever got in trouble using wire that was too big.

It is possible your boat was originally wired for a 12/24 volt trolling motor which would account for the number of wires. If it was you probably have a run/charge switch in the bow. All you need is 2 wires running frim the batteries to the front and they should be red (pos) and black (neg). The third wire is a jumoer from positive on one battery to neg on the other. You should also have a circuit breaker, like a 40 or 50 amp inline breaker in your red cable located close to the battery. If your biat was iruginalky wired 12/24 you may have 2 curcuit breakers. You can abandon them. Doesnt matter if you gave a 4 prong plug. You are only going to use 2 of them. Make sure the pos and neg from the batteries line up with the pos and neg from your t/m cable. I wired mine with 6 gauge wire

Assuming you have this corrected by now. The black Marinco plug from Academy should have a jumper strip going from the "12V" connection to the terminal where no connection can be made. This is the jumper to give 24V. I have wiring diagrams on my website.

Thanks again everyone. Routed new cables, put batteries in series, and the green light came on. Doubled the output power of the motor. Some how this thing works with 12v, but BIG improvement now that I have 24v going to it.

Instead of running at max speed I now only need two clicks on the speed button to be cruising across the lake.

Another happy customer and problem solved by the great folks of the TFF.

Thanks for the time!
