From reading this forum, it seems more people use night crawlers than any other kind of worm. I assume those that use worms have also tried wax worms, which are in cleaner bedding, but they feel night crawlers catch more fish. I haven't talked to anyone about this, so I really don't know. Maybe wax worms are harder to find??? If you use worms for bait, but not wax worms, please tell me (and other readers) why. Thanks.

For me when fishing for Sunfish it's night crawlers all the way! Again that is just me! thumb

Banker, did you try wax worms and decide night crawlers were better? Or did you start with night crawlers and see no reason to try anything else? If meal worms are as good, and I don't know if they are, they would be cleaner to handle and you wouldn't have to pinch them apart like a night crawler. Those are my only reasons for raising the question and wondering how they compare in terms of catching fish.

From my perspective, with night crawlers you can be fishing for sunfish and get a huge suprise sometimes when a big ole cat, bass or other species cannot resist the wiggling worm.

And I say that as someone who recently had a rod&reel disappear from a dock where the target of the day was sunfish nuts

I have used wax worms, meal worms, and red wigglers. Caught fish on all of em. coolio For me night crawlers worked the best, and are for my style of fishing. I work the bait a lot. juggle

Side Note: The only worm I have not used are the green glow worms! hmmm

Thanks for the reply Banker. And, thank you for your reply dafanman. Sounds like I need to stick with night crawlers for best results. A big fish of some kind took my night crawler yesterday. Almost jerked the rod out of my hand, took drag, and headed deep into the reeds. We tried to work the boat in to get the fish, but the 6# line snapped and we never knew if it was a catfish, bass, or what. Certainly gave me a jolt I wasn't expecting.

I will sometimes buy a box of worms form Walmart and go exploring the creeks. I don't carry a cooler to keep them alive longer in the sun. What I personally have found is that the red worms live longer and are far more active than the nightcrawlers in this application. If I kept the nightcrawlers cool like Banker does then they would remain active and work much better.

I always have my cartons of worms under a Coleman Ice Cube inside my playmate. They stay active just about the whole day. Also you can put em back in the refrigerator and they will stay good until the next time. coolio

Great topic!

We used to use something called a bee moth up north for bluegills and sunnies. Is that the same as wax worms?

J-Moe, I keep them in a cooler when I'm in my fishing buddy's boat and I keep them refrigerated at home. But I'm beginning to fish in a float tube on occasion, for the first time in a long time. Tube fishing is a slow, easy, quiet way to fish a cove of small section of a lake. Can't go long distances of course.

I've used mealworms lately and they seem more hardy than nightcrawlers and also don't attract those pesky bass a cats as much as nightcrawlers...😉
However, I would not go against Bankers advice if you want consistent results!

Just to add my voice: I have tried meal worms many times but the results are not nearly as good as any of the earthworm varieties. Red wrigglers would be my choice but they are hard to find. Lacking those I usually go with small pieces of Canadian nightcrawlers bought from the marina or Walmart. The marina brand in square foam boxes are better than the Walmart brand.

Many thanks for the replies. Considering how the stuff that looks like black dirt in the containers of night crawlers is so foul on our hands, and may be largely worm poop (grin), I wonder if there is a worm bedding we could use. That is, throw away the stuff they come in and put them in something cleaner. I am not a clean freak, but that stuff sticks to my hands and gets under my fingernails such that I am reluctant to eat a snack, although I try to rinse my hands after I put part of a worm on the hook. Any thoughts on this question?

Clean worm bedding is available from on-line worm farms.

Lacking that, some use corn meal. Others use damp (not wet) shredded newspaper. Damp peat moss works.

I usually just wash my hands in the lake and scrub them with my towel. I carry one or two auto towels in my tackle bag. The automotive micro fiber towels work better than the regular bath kind.
