I got a brand new Abu C4 6600, cast great in the pasture behind my house, but for the light of me every time I cast in the wind I got a nasty bird nest... It's sitting pretty in my storage room now ...

How far into the wind can you cast with an Abu baitcast reel? 80 100 feet, 100+? How do you avoid bird nest?

Why do I go fishing? To catch a box of fish and/or some quality time under the sun. Thank Heaven I never fail fishing in Texas, catching box fish or plenty of sunburn.

What rod, line and weight are you using? I have the same reel on a 7 foot mh ugly stick. When i was running 30 pound spider wired i hated the reel, it nested constantly. I have a different version with 20 pound mono and it works great.

My baitcast sitting pretty reels collection

1. Daiwa Excelerator. .. fish caught. ..hundreds of white bass and channel catfish, a few dozens of hybrids, and some nice large mouth bass... drag doesn't work anymore, bird nests and very time. It'd paid it's dues...

2. Two Abu Garcia Black Magic... fish caught... zero, bird nests right out of the box...

3. Abu C4 Ambassador. .. fish caught. .. zero , right out of the box. ..bird nests

Have you fished with someone who uses bait cast reels? That is my suggestion let them look at them & assess the situation & if all is a go let them set the reels & watch how they hold the rod and cast...Perhaps someone on here could assist you... I would be glad 2 but I live a 'little" far off cheers

If it ain't broke don't fix it...but go ahead and work on it anyway.....

Tried on my old reliable Daiwa Excelerator 7" mh and a 9" Shimano rods, PP braid 30# then 20#, and now spooled with Berkley Big Game 20# mono , bird nest is still on the spool, lol.

baitcast reels have never been my favorite, but I used my Daiwa Excelerator for several years... but hey I'm open to learning new things... if all things equal I like baitcast reels, they are less bulky, but I doubt that a baitcast reel can beat spinning reel on banking applications, e.g. wind, darkness, long distant casts when you can't see your rig (ghost minnow bait ), mud, etc.

I bought Abu C4 thinking it's going to be my do all reel for jigging and bank catfish fishing... well...

It's all in the thumb and the spool brake setting. It may not work for you, but as a rule, to set mine up for my comfort zone I will rig it up with the sinker, hook, etc. that I plan to use, I'll reel it up to the sinker, crank down on the spool brake knob until it is completely tight, release the bail and back off on the knob until the tackle starts to drop with a small amount of resistance. Try a couple casts and you can fine tune it from there to get distance without overspooling. Casting in to the wind is a pain, but I watch my gear as it flies and as soon as it stops carrying forward momentum I thumb the spool to slow it down.

I pretty much don't use the brake on any of mine. I find I can cast further like that. On the other hand sometimes the wind bites me with a nest... I learned how to get em out its not so bad.

^^^^^^This is a good practice. When throwing in the wind you just have to have a good feel for the reel and everyone likes it set different. So just go out and throw it over and over and you will find what works best for you.

Chad Ferguson has some pretty good tips. I followed his advice and spooled up with 30lb mono to learn with. The thicker line is a whole lot easier to untangle!

Don't like the c4's, higher gear ratio makes the reel too fast for my liking. I keep the friction all the way loose on the c3's, I can't on the c4.

Use big mono and throw for the fences is my suggestion. Them little short casts are harder to do, then really laying into it is.
