What's everyone's 2d sonar frequency preference and why?
90% of the time, I'm fishing water 15ft and less and am confident in marking fish at those depths with my side scan. With winter around the corner, I've been wanting to get my 2d sonar tuned in for the deeper water. The only time I've ever really used my traditional sonar is for marking bait a few times and striper fishing at texoma in 70ft of water.
Also, I heard on the Humminbirds that the 200 works better than the 83 khz for some reason. Is there any truth to this?

What works in one body of water might not in another I'm guessing. Some lakes the water is dark and murky with very silted in bottom. What ever the settings are for that lake (assuming you can even get it dialed in) may not be so good on another lake with clear water and clean rocky bottom.
With that said, my HB seems to do better with a lower frequency/narrow beam setting if the water is dirty/murky with a soft bottom. Once I get on deep clear water I bump it up to 455hz and 800hz.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

83khz is a 60 degree beam which produces a 1:1 conical beam. This means that at 15' deep, you have a 15' wide beam at the lake bottom. At 40' of depth, you have 40' wide beam at the bottom.

The 200khz beam is a 20 degree beam and a weaker single that doesn't go as deep as the 83khz beam.

Typically I use the combo setting of 200/83. for just a single setting, always use the 83khz. Understand, that since the sonar is conical in shape, the higher things are in the water column, they may not show on the screen as they are outside the sonars ping.

I always leave the 455/800 setting on 455.

Good info. I guess I need to play more with my 83 khz settings next time I'm out. It seems like when I have it on 83, everything turns grainy and there's no arches, just blobs of color.

Here are side by side pics of my Humminbird set to 200/83. One in Clear mode and one in Switchfire. I tend to leave it in Switchfire most often.

* 83/200 combined setting
* Switchfire Max Mode when in deep water / crank sensitivity down to get rid of the junk ( unless a pile of junk is what you need to see at the moment )
* And main thing... Slow down to at least 2 mph to get a less crammed and cleaner look when fish are spotted. Lol!

My oldy stinks compared to the new, but it's all I got for now... popcorn Not Monsters

One last thing. Actually, two things.

1.). I love both clear mode and Swtchfire max mode. I now use em both and have learned the advantages and disadvantages of each or things I like and don't like. I owe Salsa a cup of coffee for this one. Lol!

& 2.) The most important thing that one needs to understand when it comes to clear and switchfire max mode is Time Varied Gain. I owe Smoky a cup of coffee for that one. Maybe two. Lol!

cheers

Good little youtube video here from Doug Vahrenburg, a Humminbird expert. This clip sure helped me in getting my 688DI settings dialed in and understanding what does what the best.
