Last Sunday I was fishing Lake Weatherford. I paddled out as the sun was rising and headed for the aerators. I arrived at the first one and threw my cast net and snagged a large school of shad. I took a few fat ones and threw the rest back (waste not, want not). I began fishing furiously with both lures and live shad with no luck. I then began hearing someone from shore repeatedly calling out "Katy, come back here Katy!" I figured it was just someone in the park trying to get their reluctant dog to come back to them. The call became almost constant, "KATY, KATY, KATY, KATY,KATY,KATY." I was beginning to think, man if that dog didn't come back after the first hundred calls she isn't coming back now. I scanned the shore line but didn't see anything with my aged eyes. I went back to not catching any fish and trying to enjoy the peace and quiet of a nice summer morning on the lake. Unfortunately, the guy continued calling "KATY, KATY, KATY, KATY, KATY... I cruised to another aerator and tried my luck there and still couldn't get a bite all while hearing an almost constant stream of "KATY, KATY, KATY, KATY." (Are y'all getting tired of this yet because I sure was). It was then that the cry turned plaintive. Imagine that a fat kid named his favorite ice cream Katy and then dropped her on the ground before he could take his first bite. You can hear his plaintive cry of despair "KAaaaaattttyyyyyy." Shortly thereafter, I heard him yell "call that boat for help." Seeing that I was the only "boat" on the water I perked up. It was then that I noticed a lady on the shore and she began calling for help. Suddenly it struck me that Katy might be a child in distress or something so I kicked my Outback into high gear and started heading towards the shore from about 200 yards out. The lady was waving from the restricted area close to the water discharge. I disregarded the restricted area boys and paddled directly toward her and it was then that I noticed Katy about 120 yards offshore still dog paddling. It would seem that Katy the german shorthaired pointer was in a bird chasing mood and there were several targets a long way from shore that were tempting her to follow them. Although her heart was in it her body was giving out. I pedaled close to try and grab her but I was wearing a buff so she must have thought that I was an evil Hobie riding ninja because she swam away from me. I then began trying to herd her towards the shore but she was wearing down quickly. She tried boarding my Hobie once unsuccessfully. Those of you that have failed at boarding a kayak in the water surely understand that feeling. I finally managed to grab her collar as she swam next to my kayak towards the shore. She then began to really slow down so I pulled her onto my kayak using an incorrect lifting technique that my torso muscles are still regretting. I deposited an indignant Katy on shore with her owner and pedaled away batman-style. Happy ending? No, I didn't even get a single bite!

I have a GSP I love and had to get her a lifejacket for anytime she is around water for that exact reason. When she goes into bird zone it is really hard to get her out of it.

Awesome story, and you tell it well. I have a special place in my heart for GSP's. I love em. It's not every day, that you get to save a life.

like the man says...if you're swimming in the ocean and get bitten by a shark, its not a shark attack. You're in THEIR neighborhood. If you're at home in your shower, turn around and a shark is in there with you...THAT'S a shark attack
