I just got a modern sonar. I have been using the old circle flasher and finally decided to try a new one out. Yesterday I tried the new one out, it is an Elite 7 HDI. I suppose the blobby looking arches are small sand bass or little schools of baitfish. Can anyone confirm this, or am I totally off on this?

I played around with that. It was on 70% when I took that pic. I will turn it up and try it. This is day and night from what I am familiar with, but I think I will like it in due time. Thanks for the info.

Turn the kHz to about 84ish and use side scan if you have it. The little arches are usually fish and the blobs that are bright in the center are typically bait. Watch YouTube videos. My friend just got a new Lowrance and we have learned a lot.

Is it possible to do something your whole life and still be an ameteur?

I missed that. Change your settings to 83 kHz.

If you are talking about the splotchy arches at the top of the screen, I would have to say that was surface noise or prop wash since you were in 55' of water and the gain was 70%. That little arch around 40' is definitely a fish.

Possibly surface noise, the engine was off, so prop wash is out. Those spots showed up as we drifted over them and then the screen was pretty clear after that.

Then I would say it is possible that it was shad or baitfish.

I have the same unit TCK and am new to these fancy electronics as well. I have an appointment with Slade Aug 2nd to fine tune and learn the unit. It's a long drive from Perrin to Lake Fork, but I hear it will be worth it once he has it tuned.

I am seriously considering that. I may make the drive from Jacksboro myself. I have always wanted to fish there anyways.
