Met guide, Greg West, at the marina just before sunrise, quickly loaded the boat, and hit the water. What a beautiful morning to be outdoors! We were very impressed with this lake... Gorgeous scenery, almost crystal clear water, well maintained properties all along the shore... Oh yeah, almost forgot. Greg was a great guy, and we really appreciated his trying something brand new, just to please his clients... We asked him to put us on the big ol' gills we had been reading about, instead of the largemouth bass he is known for. He was totally honest right up front, and said he had never targeted sunfish of any kind, and had no clue where to find them on this lake, but he'd give it his best shot. His "best shot" was terrific! The first spot we tried was loaded with 'gills, but they were a typical 5-6" instead of the pigs we had heard about. We did get one 7" and decided maybe we oughta keep anything 7" or larger, up to a dozen, then go after crappie, cats, or bowfin. After an hour or so of catching lots of the typical gills, Greg suggested we try another spot. We had one in the livewell at that point. We agreed, and that was the best decision we made that day... Within fifteen minutes of arriving, the bigguns became very active. Greg was awed by the size of these monsters, and quickly came to understand why anglers would actual "target" them. We were using 5' ultralight spinning outfits with P-Line CX Premium 4lb line. The diameter was so small it about kicked Greg's butt, trying to tie knots, but he hung in there, and got the hang of it before long. These pigs bent the tiny rods in half over and over again, and even Greg was really getting into it! A few of the players... We had a dozen for the skillet before long, and it crossed my mind I oughta take advantage of Greg's real talent, and have him teach Jos how to use plastics for bass. I kept playing with 'gills and had a hoot watching her learn a new technique... She was a pretty quick student! The fruits of our labor... Couldn't have asked for a more enjoyable time on the water or a better guide. We highly recommend Greg for bass... OR big ol' gills!
