I have been trying to fish the rip rap along the dam with a 1/4 oz football shakey head, but have been frustrated by the number of times it hangs up in the rocks. I seem to have less snags if I throw directly at the dam rather than the usual 30 degrees ahead of the boat, but still spend a lot of time hung in the rocks. Does anyone have suggestion on brand or type of stand up jig head to use. Any other helpful hints would be appreciated.

go to an 1/8 oz or less. I use just a simple sliding lead bullet weight. feel a rock, then just lift it a little.

+1 on 1/8th or less. Keep your rod tip high so that when you hop the bait in comes straight up off the bottom. If you drag it, it will hang up a lot.

Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

The football head jig is more for flat smooth areas, that thing as you found out will get hung up on every rock it passes. I've lost more fish on a spot remover than any other shakey head. I've switched to Dirty Jigs, no problems!

Best advice is to buy a lot of shaky head jigs, rip rap tends to eat them...

Agree with this, reason I started poring my own. Makes loosing 3-4 each trip alot easier.

I like the Owner 1/8 oz. shaky head. It does pretty well around rocks. It has a spring holder with a centering pin. Also has a 4/0 hook. Best shaky head I've found.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

I also like the owner 1/8 or 1/4 oz. The round one, it does not have the spring holder pin thing, just a hook. Try weightless around the rip rap. Once you learn to fish weightless (patience) you will have at least one line ready at all times.

find a shakey head that has a football head design so it comes through rip rap a lot better plus they skip under docks much better also .

I've caught more fish on an 1/8 oz Pro Model Spot Remover than I have any other shakey head. I switched to a football head type and didn't seem to get hung up any less. I think it's just the nature of the beast when fishing rip rap. Also agree with keeping your rod tip vertical.

If you have the patience for it, neko rig with a 1/0 hook trigged with the hook eye facing the tail just above the nose weight works well around rip rap.
