When fly fishing for bluegills, do any of you ever attach a piece of night crawler or some kind of live bait to your fly?

Catalpa worm would stay on decent.

My brother and I always say that flies are as good as live bait. Dry flies seem to slay the bluegills.

I don't understand.

If you are going to bait the hook, then why bother with the fly? A plain hook is cheaper than a fly and will be just as effective when baited as a more expensive fly with bait...

So, why spend the extra money for a fly if you are baiting the hook? hmmm

Rex, maybe the fly will get their attention and draw them close for an inspection, and a tiny piece of bait will seal the deal. A way to add scent to a fly. I know I would probably be banned from a trout fly fishing forum for asking a question like this, but figured anyone targeting a sunfish would not be opposed to trying anything that would get them to bite a fly.

Hagphish, yes, dry flies are great when they are shallow. Nothing is more fun.

Linecaster, thanks for showing a sense of humor. Gave me, and others I'm sure, a good chuckle.

Lolol that would be like dunking your fly in catfish bait just to see what happens, :p

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!

Had not thought about catfish bait. Could fish for bream and catfish with one fly. LOL
