We were fishing behind the dam at PK today and my son noticed a Blue Heron struggling in the water. We assumed tangled in line but not sure but couldn't get to it because it was just beyond the do not enter fence at the rocks. Cole grabs my knife and starts to go to it but I called him off and said maybe best not go into the restricted area and he was visibly upset but agreed and didn't go to help and he felt bad for rest of the day.(picture Ace Ventura here)We did however upon leaving went up to the BRA office and let them know and they said "we'll see if we can do something" and I suppose it made my son feel like he did something so I doubt if the bird made it. What say you? Should I have just let him go rescue it(30' past the fence that you can step around)he is 28 years old btw.

No, you were correct in calling him off. There is a reason for it being off limits and had something happened to him, imagine how you would have felt?

You did right. What if whatever had the bird tangled got ahold of your son? That could turn bad fast.

Blue Herons have been know to jab people with their beaks. Toss a towel or some-such over the bird if you ever do attempt to untangle one.

I wasn't too worried about him as wouldn't have had to enter the water anyway and he is experienced with the handling of wildlife, but yeah I suppose it was the right thing. I know that if I hadn't been there he would have rescued or attempted to.

Well, upon first reading your post, what I wouldn't have done was trying to picture in my mind some type of blue fish tangled in line, ie blue herring. Couldn't figure out what it could be until I got to the end and realized it was a HERON. Lol

You did right. That area is restricted for a reason. I guess you could have gone to the BRA right away to see if they could do something. But other than that not much to be done.

Sucks sometimes, but nature will take care of its own.
You did the correct thing by staying out from the restricted area. And those rocks suck, trying to fight a bird and keep your footing could be tough.

Heron would have poked his eyes out if he got close enough.

No, he is an experienced bird handler no doubt if he would have got to it he would have helped it. But you are right that could easily happen.

Blue Herons have been know to jab people with their beaks. Toss a towel or some-such over the bird if you ever do attempt to untangle one. That's very good advice. Pretty much any bird will, but especially dangerous are the long pointy beaked ones. They'll go straight for your eyes.
