hey guys, i clearly understand the concept of taper, but as far as fast vs extra fast tapers do any of you have better experience with one over the other?
I know that extra fast is said to have more sensitivity but may present difficulties in keeping the fish hooked, but does extra fast really have that much more sensitivity than a fast taper??
Does anyone have experience or knowledge with both that can share their preference??
Ive fished both and it didnt really seem to make a diff to me.
this is for MH and H rods.

I don't think it makes a huge difference either. No noticeable difference in sensitivity for me. Moderate to fast is definitely noticeable, Fast to X Fast not so much. But it'll vary from manufacturer to manufacturer too.

Higher end rods in X-fast usually offer the ultimate in feel and sensitivity for jig and worm apps, particularly for deeper water, heavy cover and heavier lines. For more open water and lighter lines a fast action may be more appropriate but still offer great sensitivity in the better rods.

I can notice a slight difference in them, I use St Croix Legend Tournament series rods. I like the extra fast tip for fishing deep jigs, never have a problem with loosing fish and actually think you get a better hook set. JMO

the only thing i don't like with a slower rod is when banging rocks.....also harder on the accuracy of the cast...for me

On rod sensitivity, and this is just my opinion, I have a pile of rods, like many of you, from 7'11 Swim Bait rods, many brands (Team Daiwa, Shimano, Bass pro shops, etc. etc.) Most are Medium heavys, but I have mediums, Heavys, etc. etc. Various Tapers. The MOST "Sensitive " rod in my entire arsenal - ready? - is the 6' Bass Pro Shops, Bionic Blade, Lite action rod, and is my drop shot rod. Yes, the "Fairy Wand", "Buggy Whip", etc., etc. I learned to drop shot in S0. Cal, from an expert. And I can feel a bass just look at the bait on this rod & feel it, LOL. I don't recommend this rod much on some of the Texas lakes -too may snags. But there are few lakes that will allow the use of it, and have landed many bigger than 4 pound fish on it, on 6 lb. test. It's REAL fun & satisfying, to land a big fish on this set up. Go ahead, use your broomsticks, LOL

The difference in fast v x fast is probably only noticeable on hook sets further from boat or in deeper water perhaps, in context of worm rods. I don't think the tape changes the sensitivity within the same weight rod. I.E. a medium-heavy extra fast is no different in feel to a medium heavy fast or medium heavy moderate sensitivity wise, that has to do with blank construction/composition and weight. The taper simply affects the loading of the rod, and the rod is only loaded when casting or on hookset/playing a fish. Other than those moments, tape doesn't come into play.
