Med or med lite. Your rod choice. I use a Bass Pro Carbon Lite and a Wright Mcgill Skeet rod. Daiwa Exceler EX2000SH. Has a 6.0:1 ratio. Most spinning are slow geared.

Since you posted in the 'Bass' section, I'll assume you're targeting bass with this set up.

An inexpensive set up would be an UglyStik GX2 spinning rod, with a Pflueger President 6935 reel. Put 10lb. Braid on it, and you should be able to do most anything with it. I can vouch for this set-up.

Bass Pro also has a pretty good combo (Tourney Special).

Diawa also makes some good reels, as does Shimano.

I was planning on going by bass pro after work today to get some ideas but I would rather have the forums opinions

get a mid range shimano reel, and i have mid or upper range all star rod.in reality a hundred dollar rod from bass pro would do you better with a 29 dollar shimano in 2500 size light strong and sensitive.it will handle any fish you can catch in open water.we have caught many huge red fish and trout on this setup.

I used the fairy wand alot when i had a broken bone in my hand. I would recommend a 7ft med or med light. I like a phlueger president reel but brand are a matter of feel. My biggest tip would be to make sure the combo is well balance. U don't want a 6 ft rod with a huge reel. I opt for a 7ft rod and a size 25 or 30 reel.

I use shimano stradic 1000's as much as my curados with 8# line. keep gear ratio in mind, most spinning reels are slow. a 6'6"mh rod works for what I use it for.

Buy a BPS Carbonlite combo. Can't beat it for the money
