I've only been fishing for bass for about 2 yrs regularly at my local ponds. My go to lure has been a frog during this time of the year. The problem is that I'm only landing about 10% of the blowups that I get. I've been fishing with 50lb braid and I'm also using a heavy action rod as well. Do some lure brands work better than others as far as hook up rate? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

What frog are you using? Try taking pliers and bending the hooks ever so slightly upward away from the body (assuming its a hollow body frog). I'm partial to the Spro line of hollow body frogs. 10% is way low. I would say I'm somewhere between 80-90% and I throw a frog a lot.

I've been using the h2O line from academy. And I'll definitely try that later on this evening and see how it works. I may also get some different brands of frogs as well. Ive also heard that you must wait a moment or two before setting the hook, and I've been practicing this as well since its hard to not just react to the bite.

Several things I would wonder about....biggest thing is your hookset. Are you delaying your hookset to ensure the fish has the frog before you set it? Typically count to 2 before setting the hook. Also...are you sweeping your hookset or setting it upward? you might be pulling it out too fast to set the hook in the first place.

As RedRaider said you can bend the hooks out to help you a little more. Brands of frogs really doesn't matter....if you are missing that many fish, your frog and retrieve is doing it's job, it's up to you to land the fish.

Are you sure bait fish are "popping" your frog or hitting the legs?? Bream love to hit the legs...

I love to frog fish and my two favs are the Booyah Pad Crasher Jr and the Spro poppin bronze-eye.....can't go wrong with them.....

I figured it had to do something with my hookset. I've probably been to eager to set the hook out of reaction, thus leading me to loose alot of fish. And I doubt they are bream or sunfish, the blowups are too big in comparison. But I will definitely bend the hooks a tiny bit while I adjust to the different hook set and see what it does. Thank you

Drag each hook across your thumb nail. If it does not stop then they need to be sharpened.

I went through the same thing. I missed the first 17 strikes on the Spro frog. I bent the hooks out, cut a half inch off the legs and learned to wait a little longer before setting the hook. Learned it from these guys on here. You may also have a lot of fish just slapping at the bait and not swallowing it. The Spro Baby popper is my favorite.

frog fishing is awesome in local ponds. probably my favorite way to catch bass because of the huge explosions. i made the mistake of setting the hook too soon early on. then i was told to wait and feel the weight of the fish for 1 to 2 seconds before setting the hook. now my hookup ratio is prob 80% once i feel the weight of the fish versus 20-30%. but sometimes you just cant avoid a fish slapping at it.

make sure to wait and not rip the frog out of the fishes mouth especially if you are using a hollow body frog

No frog will give you a 100% hookup. Be patient when you see the blow up.

If you try to wait until you feel the fish, you will have a lot better hookup percentage. It's a lot easier said than done though. Unfortunately it just takes time and experience.

A smaller size frog can be really good on a pond. Consider something like a Booyah Pad Crasher Jr. (smaller size, 1/4 oz. frog). Bend the hooks up and slightly out.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

Went fishing and had 3 strike my lure and I managed to land 2! I was actually pausing and letting it take my line for a second and setting the hook. The bite was rather slow today compared to other days. Thanks everyone
