Where is it? There's a Sabinal River near Utopia, but I don't see a Frio River that far north. Least not on the map I have.

If the Sabinal is where you're headed, check out this link that shows the river height and cfs.

Also there are river gauges on the Frio - go to this one and look below the gauge and there are upstream/downstream buttons you can use to navigate the gauges up and down the river.

I'll be fishing the Leakey area, by what I saw it looks a lot like the llano River where I live.

Well, did ya do any good? I am just south of Leakey, right now. Sunrise is in 40 minutes and I cannot wait to start fishing. We got here yesterday. I did a scout down stream and saw some nice holes with sunfish, catfish, and a few bass. Got my 4 weight ready with 6 pound tippet. Tied up a few flies in the 8 to 10 size. Just waiting for it to get light.

Did you do any good?

Well, I caught em yesterday. Lots of sunfish and a couple of scrappy largemouth, on my 4 weight. Great time. There is about a 15 inch Guadalupe in the hole below the house. I want him. Anybody else fishing the frio?

Great fishin again this morning. Waded with my 4 weight, between Leakey and criders. Caught lots of sunfish a couple of largemouth and a small Guadalupe on the surface. Had a great experience last evening. Hooked a 5 inch sunfish in a deep hole. As I stripped him in, 2 scrappy 2 # largemouths chased him like a couple sharks on a hooked redfish. At 1 point my sunfish actually completely disappeared in one of their mouths. I actually fought the bass for about 5 seconds before he spit him out. Very exciting. Of course I could not get either of those bass to eat a fly... good times, none the less.

The Sabinal River in Utopia is in great shape! Fished it a couple of times in July. Caught some nice Sunfish and a couple of nice bass. Water was clear!.

It's an EP Baitfish pattern with a half a PT Nymph tied in front of it, lol. I think the hook is a Mustad 3Xlong streamer hook in about a size 6.
That's from memory, since I tied it 4 or 5 years ago.
The theory was bream, fight over bait all of the time, show 'em a fish chasin' a bite, and they'll try to take it away from it. I tied another one like it on 2 hooks, articulated style.
It fished pretty good, but I don't remember catching anything on it.

Sorry I haven't been on in a while. Yes we had a blast on the frio, the water was amazing and the fish in the cooler water fought hard. We fished around concan and another crossing down the road thats at the stripes intersection. Used olive beaded wb's and llano hoppers during mid day. The next weekend we stayed 4 days with a friend at their cabin on the north fork of the Guadalupe by wagon wheel crossing. The bass and gills were bigger there but the water was a tad warmer. My favorite part of the trip was when my sister grabbed my fly rod off the bank while we were all swimming. She caught at least ten long ears and was hooked. I know what she's getting for her birthday!
