Just wanting to know if bullheads are considered a subspecies of channels and blues and if they count towards the total number of cats you can keep? I know most people on here would say to use them for bait for the bigger blues and flatheads, but I used to eat the larger ones when I lived in Yankee country up north and they really aren't that bad! I was catching them in the 12" range the other day out on lake woodlands and was just wondering what they are considered.

From TPWD website-----

Like black bullheads, yellow bullheads are not generally considered an important gamefish in Texas, though they are readily fished for by anglers in the Panhandle, and in far East Texas. Angling techniques for the two species are very similar. The largest specimen reported to date in Texas was 5.59 pounds.

It says they are not an important game fish. It does NOT say they aren't a game fish.

I have et a bunch of them in my day. Caught from my grandpa's slough. Some were near 2 lbs and if left in the cattle watering trough for a couple of weeks they would lose most of the muddy taste.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."

Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

Any fish that can be legally used for bait, like bullheads, aren't regulated. Same as panfish. No minimum length or possession limit.

They're not a game fish. You can use them as bait and keep as many as you like.
