No real need for that in a Tundra IMHO. The 5.7 can already tow a ton and the cost of adding a Cummins to a Tundra would make for an obscenely expensive pickup. And Toyota would have to design a heavier duty transmission and chassis to handle towing anything larger than the 5.7 already can. It's not like they already have a 3/4 ton pickup like the domestics.

Not knocking on the 5.7 tundra at all its a capable well respected truck, but its not a substitute for a 3/4-1ton pickup, its a go fast 1/2 ton.

It might be their step to break into the heavier duty market. Maybe they can help out their fuel mileage a little? Who knows, I bed with a little tweaking and tuning the trans that backs up the 5.7 will handle it just fine, in reality your looking at a drop in HP from the 5.7 and about a 25% increase in torque, not earth changing performance differences. Hopefully it will get better mpg's and have a flatter torque curve at a lower rpm.

They could use the same transmission thats in the 6.7 Ram. The Aisin 6 speed is being used in the new Titan diesel.

You know what's funny is I got the title to my 2014 tundra in the mail a couple of weeks ago and right there on the title it says 3/4 ton... guess I should call the DMV and tell them the truck isn't heavy duty enough for that distinction.

Like Allison1 said a new transmission with it, can use an already in production trans, heck they are probably pretty much using the already in production 5 liter cummins Nisan is using, beef up the rear suspension and the front to hold the heavier motor and bam, you have something to compete with the big boys diesel line.

As far as price... I don't think too many people care about the price that much anymore. If you gotta have leather and nav and backup cam your gonna spend a ment anyway.

The use of the word "Tonnage" in modern vehicles is obsolete... Manufactures still use these terms because they know it would be to complicated for us to understand any other system. But, yes most 1/2 tons are 3/4 tons of yore...

I think if Nissan and Toyota can use the right parts and keep the price between most "1/2" and "3/4" tons it will be a hell of a truck. However you will still have your Jap haters out there that think only 'Merica can build a truck, and will blow it off... 355hp and 555TQ (which are the most current specs for this 5.0 cummins) and 25+ real world mpg....I'd buy it...

If they can bring 355 hp and 555tq along with 25+ mpg to fruition then it sounds like a hell of a pickup.

I find it hard to believe that a 5.0 putting out those numbers will get 25 mpg when the ecodisel, a smaller, economy built and minded vehicle didn't even make that combined in testing. Guess we will see.
