First time saltwater fishing soon. I plan on going to Galveston on the seawall and sitting on the rock jetties to wet a line or two. If I could have some input/advice I'd greatly appreciate it.
And yes, I've read the sticky for the basic info lol.
1. Do I need a minimum of 6.5 ft rods to have any appreciable casting distance? Currently I only have one 6.5 ft ugly stik spinning reel combo spooled with 12 lb mono. I have two spare rods that are shorter 5.5 ft spooled with the same line test. Would they be grossly underpowered?
2. I plan on using a 1 oz. pyramid weight, with leader, and dead bait (most likely squid/shrimp) on some circle hooks. The waves in Galveston dont LOOK very strong. But then again, I'm naive on that topic so I'm not sure if the weight is too low.
3. How should presentation be? Similar to freshwater channel catfishing (kick back and relax) or cast and retrieve, similar to bass fishing?
I apologize if my questions have been answered elsewhere. If I could be pointed in the right direction, it would be nice.

I witnessed a few ppl doing the catfish thing. Seen a few smaller reds caught and some drum. Saw one guy catch a nice shark. Look like mud minnows for bait. I'm trying to target trout and looking for some help in locating them. Best of luck to ya.
Thump Thump...... Whack!!

Everything you have will work. I fish the Galveston surf a lot and when I go out on the rocks I go to the end and cast out as far as I can and set it in the rod holder and wait. Remember to set your drag low. I would use fresh dead shrimp for whiting and croakers. Squid will catch catfish, small sharks, and occasional redfish. Hope this helps. Let us know how you did. For locating trout you will want green water. I would wade out to the green water if it is not close enough to cast out to.

I go whenever I can but it is a 5 hr trip. When I go I have been fishing the pier off 90th street (Jimmy's Restaurant is upstairs). Most people fish with small open faced reel combos or serious Shark rods. I fish with a 8' rod and I rig it like I am catfishing with a 1-2oz slip/egg weight, swivel and a 18"leader with a #2 or 3 hook and fish with cut bait or squid and catch a little of everything. I noticed folks with popping corks and live mullet and shrimp doing really well too. If you want to wade or fish the rock jetties the same rigs work. Wading in the surf I saw guys catching everything on popping corks and live shrimp.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

What is the diff (If Any) between Gator Trout and Specks?? Gator trout are big trout. No difference except the size.

Thanks for the advice fellas.
What is the most cost effective way of getting squid? Do only bait shops offer whole squid? I rarely ever see whole squid for sale at the grocery store, whereas im sure ican find raw shrimp almost anywhere.

they sell it at rollover pass where you pay to park. There are bait stores on 61st street right off 45 when you come on to the island.

IF you have an H-mart near you (Asian market) you can get some... but Roll Over pass like said above is good.

Cool thanks.
Any squid will do right? No particular kind that I need to avoid/watch out for? I was thinking about tossing some frozen octopus/smelt out there too.

Here is the simplest method to catch fish in saltwater: tie a double rig with small hooks to a sinker, put some dead shrimp, cast as far as you can, and set the hook when you fill a nibble. You won't have to wait long before you start catching whiting, hardheads, and gafftop. You will even catch doubles. The problem is avoiding them from getting hooked before bigger species get to your bait. You can cut a whiting into chunks and toss it out with a bigger hook and you may hook small sharks and red drum. Squid will stay longer in your hook. You can buy it at any Asian store. Any squid will do. It usually comes frozen so you may want to thaw it before you fish.
PS: You will lose some terminal tackle in the rocks while fishing jetties. Everyone does.

A picture speaks a thousand words. This is a double rig. The fish in the bottom is a speckled trout so you cannot use that one for bait, but you will catch sand trout. Sand trout is whitish and lacks the black spots. Those are ok to use for bait.

Nice!
After some research, it seems most saltwater fish possess sharper teeth that can be dangerous, when compared to freshwater animals.
I plan on CPRing my catches, is it necessary to use a dehooker or should I be ok with some thick rubber gloves?

Don't stick your fingers/thumb in their mouth and whatever you do, don't get finned by a hardhead.
