Question: For those of you who've not yet purchased a shallow water anchoring system such as a Power Pole or a Talon, what kind of anchor do you use? Does anyone use a chunk-it-over-the-side-and-tie-it-off anchor anymore? If not, why? If so, what?

I have to do something. It doesn't take much wind to blow me right off of a hump or a point. I just can't hold it with my older trolling motor.

I would really suggest trying to upgrade your trolling motor.

this

If I can't hold in the wind and rollers on my TM, an anchor isn't going to hold

i do and i know its not the thing to do for bass fishing but when you find a spot either producing or you need to explore anchoring can work. I know most guys don't want an anchoring sytem on their boat....so i will just comment on anchors. The mantus anchors is one of the best anchors i've come across. Mantus anchor i have a thirteen pound one and it holds me solid and a lot better than the 25lb one i used to use. check them out. just a thing till i rig up some way for a power pole grin

Don't be afraid to use a regular old traditional anchor. Summertime means you will be fishing deeper water. Deeper water often involves points and brush piles. Points often involve wind and current. I'd rather concentrate on what I'm doing with my presentation than fighting the trolling motor making all that noise.

Back when I used to fish a lot at night by myself on Cypress Springs I learned how to use an anchor to my advantage. I learned the big fish sense danger or something wrong when they hear the trolling motor and other noises. I often would shut off my big motor 100-150 yds out then troll in from the upwind side. I would then drift in and when I got where I wanted to fish I would quietly drop the anchor and position myself where I wanted. Then I would be as quiet as possible and fish super slow. IMO this is the best way to fish a brush pile or any deeper structure you are wanting to sit on for a while. Them big bass know when something aint right. using an anchor is to your advantage. Don't worry about how the fancy high dollar rigs do it.

If it ain't yours don't mess with it!

Make sure you have a lot more rope than you think you need. You need at least 5 feet of rope for every foot of depth. Often 100 feet isn't enough to anchor in 20 feet. That makes it a challenge to drop the anchor in the right spot to drift the boat where you want to be. I got pretty good at it before I got an I-pilot trolling motor.

I STILL use my anchor. No power poles....enough stuff hanging off this boat....i can handle not being cool. i don't use it often but I have it if I need it. I am 71 and hard for me to keep my balance when the wind gets above 15 mph...I am still gonna get on those windy points but cant do it with my trolling motor any more..(101 lb thrust)...the previous post are correct...it takes lots of rope...like 5 times depth when the wind is high....still getting it done, just not in the new modern, expensive, cool guy way....

I have a Talon, but still us my anchor fishing rock piles and points in deep water and heavy wind.
My troll motor can handle just about any wind but why fight it if you have the fish pinpointed? You can cast to the exact same place a lot easier when achored.

I use an anchor all the time in deeper water. I just make sure to adjust my drop point with respect to wind direction to make sure my boat is exactly where I want it. Takes time to learn how much rope will be needed to hold your boat. Usually more than you think. I usually nose into the wind and gently lower anchor. I make sure my casts will be with the wind. This way I can anchor farther away from my target and make longer casts with the wind. This also puts your rope behind where you are casting helping eliminate a big fish tangling up in your rope as you fight her in.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways with a fishing rod in one hand, 10# LMB in the other, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and yelling "Wow! What a Ride!

I have before in strong wind on structure i knew had fish, works very well as long as you position the boat correctly, i've even used two before when fishing team tournies, attach both to the front and rear cleats on opposite side of bote so the bat is lenghtwise to the structure so you both have good range to the structure and the rope is on opposite side you will be landing fish from.

I've also put them out in the front solo facingt he wind and fished from the back deck, with the bow and the boat facing the wind, bow cuts the rough waves better than the deck.

Two anchors and a bunch of anchor rope is a lot cheaper than a high dollar trolling motor and a pair of Power Poles or Talons. Don't get me wrong, I'd sure love to have them. But in the meanwhile, I might just find me a couple of anchors. Thanks guys.

Nothing holds like a box anchor w/ 6-10' of chain on it. They are bulky unless you get a collapsible one, but they hold the best. There are people in the classifieds that sell both collapsible and solid box anchors. If you can weld, they are very easy to make.

Get your hands on Bill Murphy's book some good detail about anchoring.
