I originally built this box about 2 years ago, and did so without a whole lot of research, it worked but didn't have the 'fit and finish' I wanted, so I learned a bit and came up with this current version. I hope it helps anyone who needs to do this for their kayak.

I have a 7.2 amp/hr 12v SLA battery inside the box. I can also store my fish finder (up to elite 5 model) along with a pair of orange float/markers for marking positions and all wiring.

there is also a nice outer storage for tools, spare fuses, bolts, and any other item necessary related to the battery/fish finder.

Inside wiring is an sae connecter coming off the terminals, through a waterproof switch and out through the box through a cable gland (water tight seal). the connections to the switch have been soldered for corrosion resistance. all connections have used shrink material where possible.

then outside the box I have a sae splitter so I can run power to 2 devices (lights and fish finder) and the wiring for the fish finder is kept nicely inside a plastic shroud tube.

all can be disassembled and put inside the box for transportation.

Can you post some pictures of the inside? Looking to build a battery box in the near future.
Very nice setup.

Where'd you find the connectors next to the on/off switch if you don't mind me asking?

I just finished my battery box and wanting to know if it's going to work or does this type of battery need more air space for cooling? Any thoughts?
Well I need to do some research to get the pics added. But I got the box from academy. It's a Plano, clear with yellow and the 3 black clips on 3 sides. The battery is a Battery Tender 22-24 amh. It is a snug fit on 2 sides with about 3" of space on 2 sides.

I think I'd like to build this. I'm currently running the YakAttack CellBlok but I don't like all the weight and bulk right there in my way. This would be a lot cleaner option!!!

May I ask how much you have in this design not including the battery or the fish finder? Just the box and all the connections you had to buy. Also, how do you have the transducer mounted and connected?

Thanks.

Jesse in OK the box is a Plano model 1460 24.99. The electrical connections should be under 5.00 and the rubber grommets the wires pass through should be under 3.00. I had the grommets from a previous job as well as most of the electrical connections. Rubber grommets I think I got at a auto parts store. The elc connections you can get at auto parts store or a Home Depot/Lowes. I also bought a wire connection that was around 5.00 from auto parts store and a inline fuse holder 4.00. Here is a pic of the wire connection and inline fuse holder.

Are there any big ziplock boxes that can fit the lithium batteries. Thank you for the setup insights.

Those 12v ups batteries go up to 9.6ah in the same size package. The Harley shop has a tube of blue silicone grease you should add to the connections to keep them clean and dry. Very nice work on these btw.

I used a small Plano ammo can. I took it to a Battery Store and chose the biggest battery that would it in it, a 12v 15 ah sealed battery. The width is perfect, and I cut some heavy foam to fill the end gaps, about an inch on one end and two inches on the other. I used another chunk of foam on top of the battery to prevent it moving if the can were tipped over.

I used the same two wire connector, about $2 at O'Reilly auto parts, plus a fuse block. No switches, I just unplug it. I also bought a battery tender brand charger. It has a plug in that accepts different attachments. The O'Reillys two wire connector is a perfect fit and I plug it into the wire coming out of the ammo can to charge the battery.

I'll try to get some pics posted soon.

You guys check out fat fifty steel ammo boxes. You can fit four 9.6ah ups batteries in there and still have room for other stuff or maybe two more batteries. That's 38.4ah easy. Might be a little heavy. Give it a solar panel and you're done.
