Not if you are as talented an angler as John Cox. If not, well...

I am curious to see the comments that will follow on this one.
I don't tournament fish so I do don't feel the need to have all the latest stuff. Don't get me wrong I would love to have a 21 foot bass boat with 250HP and all the electronics but I simply don't need it. I love looking through the classifieds here and drooling over some of the boats but I can't justify spending the dough based on how I fish.
I only fish Caddo Lake and a Bass Tracker 175 with a cheap Pirhanamax FF works pretty well for me. I think a side scan unit might make sense but covering lots of water with general patterns usually allows me to catch a few.
If I was fishing bigger lakes and travelling around the tourney trail I think I would want the all the advanteges I could get so I tip my hat to this guy for doing what he did. Pretty impressive.

All because you have the latest and greatest tech items, doesn't mean you are a better angler than those who dont. I like his approach personally, choose a few techniques and master them. Once you have done that, then branch out.

Nice article.
Evoked several memories and thoughts from the past.
1) Rick Clunn's use of a similar boat outfitted with a jet-drive.
2) My stepfather's uncanny ability to catch fish by fishing to his strength - shallow water combined with objects (or targets). On virtually an given lake he dropped his boat into.
3) My own strengths - pretty much fashioned after fishing with my stepfather from the age of 10 - and for the three decades that followed. And knowing I continue to have techniques and situations which I too could learn and improve on.
4) The fact that even though I've owned & fished out of high end boats - my favorite boat was an older Ray Craft. It was sort of like the U.S.S. Enterprise and it boldly ventured where those shiny, high dollar, hi-tech boats might take a beating before the day ended.
5) And of a saying shared with me by a wise friend. "A guy earned his $ and if it makes him happy to spend it on a big boat, with all of the newest most expensive toys, well - good for him if it brings him joy, fulfillment and satisfaction.
Again, nice article - thank you for sharing the link.

i think that was a great article. I do not think that always having the best means yoou are going to catch the most and biggest bass. that being said sometimes those toys make it so much easier

Great article. I think lots of guys get caught up in the technical side of fishing rather than "just fishin" People seem to care more about who's faster, who looks better, and all around just being better. I've won thousands of dollars out of a old 1983 16' bass tracker I had years ago. Reading this article made me smile!

Great article and man did that take guts. Not sure what other income he has but still that is expensive if it does not go well. Great point again about time on the water and not doing the same old thing every time out. Plus just like John Hope found there are fish shallow mid depth and deep at all times of the year because bass have home ranges. Buck Perry's piont about thoroughly straining the water on the best structure available. Meaning all depths from shallow to the deepest I'm the area that can be finished correctly and having checked all speeds at each depth range, then you have to assume there are no fish there, AT THAT TIME and need to recheck at a different time and would make sense when conditions are different Pleading to another lesson it is all about timing. Got to be in the right place at the time, fishing in the right way. I am willing to bet Knox will make big headlines in 2016 if continues expand on what he has learned and the way he is going about his fishing. Thanks for sharing

Had to laugh, if I could 'keep up with the Jones's', I would have a new Ranger with 250 ETEC under my boat port..... God Bless

solid article and many things to learn from it. in the end most of us do the best we can with what we got......and when things get better we do alittle more. many of my best fishing memories are out of a 14ft vhull with an 18hp......but Im to old for that I will leave roughing it to the young guys.
