..being stuck walking/beating the banks and never doing much jig fishing/pitching in the past, trying to get used to the feeling. Fished Marine Creek all morning and was committed to only using this technique. Problem I was having was feeling the jig on the bottom..seemed as if all I was doing was dragging it through thick mud/moss. Throwing a 3/8oz football with Rage trailer, MH rod, 20lbs mono. My girl was wacking them with a spinnerbait but dammit, I wanna catch one on a jig...any suggestions?

With the fish bashing a spinnerbait try swimming the jig just like a spinnerbait.

I always fish a jig and a T-Rig by pitching it in on slack line; never trying to feel the bit. When I pick it up and there is resistance I set the hook. This is not the case in thick moss where every pick up you make is tight just like a load up bite would be. When fishing the slop I pitch it in and follow it down on a tight line wanting to feel the tick as if falls through the moss. If you don't feel the bite on the fall then immediately pick it up slightly off the bottom and hold it there for 10 seconds or so giving them a chance to come and take it. Keep the line tight as you do this so you can feel the bite. Then hop the the jig out of that spot to the next as you retrieve. This is like ripping it out of heavy grass to disturb the foliage, which many times causes a strike. Then repeat on each hop back to you keeping a tight line each time to feel that tick and lifting it slight off the bottom using the moss as a lever to hold it motionless in that spot suspended for a few seconds.

Sounds like pitching a jig may not have been appropriate for the situation. It's a great technique for targeting specific pieces of cover or structure but may not be a good choice around thick slimy moss. Since your girl was having success with a blade, casting and swimming the jig, as mentioned, or other moving baits may have been a better choice. Weightess plastics like a Senko may also be a good choice. Pitching a jig is a great technique to learn and one that I use very frequently but don't force it when something else is in order.

pitching a jig from the bank limits your angles drastically. don't let it mess with your gaining confidence. it is a very good technique.

Thanks for all the input, extremely helpful. I finally put the jig down and went back later on with a spinner.
