It's that time of year when the grasshoppers are everywhere around the ponds I fish. Does anybody fish with grasshoppers? If so, how do you rig 'em? I could catch a million of 'em these days. Seems like they could be put to good use.
Thanks,
Scott

They work try free lining them on them surface no weight something will get them if they are flopping on the surface. I fly fish with a grasshopper fly its small but the sunfish kill that thing. I had a big catfish take my sons grasshopper once it ended up breaking him off but I got a good look at it and would guess it was close to 5-6 lbs.

Thanks for the feedback. May have to make a grasshopper/cricket catcher, and give it a shot. There's a million of 'em where I fish.

I like to hook them under the collar behind their head. They stay alive longer like that.

I have caught sunfish, bass, catfish and an occasional crappie on grasshoppers. I use a #4 or #6 gold Aberdeen Eagle Claw, hook them about halfway down the torso, and freeline them. They will cause a bit of commotion on surface, which bass and 'gills will surely notice and investigate. Light line, so it floats longer helps.
For Cats, I catch the big green ones with the dark brown/black wings, impale them on a catfish hook and tight line them on bottom. You'd be surprised what good bait they can turn out to be.
Grasshopper fishing takes me back to my kiddom, on hot summer days on 5 mile creek. Grasshoppers was the bait of choice. Catch a bunch in the pasture, keep them in a glass coca cola bottle, and then try to get em out of there so you could bait up!

I pull the big legs off and put em on a small hook a foot under a cork and catch bluegill all day long.

I had no sooner rig it up and while baiting up another rod,BANG over the rail it went.I didn`t even get a chance to react or see what hit it.Anyone have any idea?

Pretty much anything in the lake will nail a hopper. When I get a rod 'n reel pulled in and have to go in after it, the culprit is usually a gar. I do know an ole boy who caught a 7# bass that way, though.

Bonz, I'd bet it was a catfish. I have caught some really nice ones on minnows while crappie fishing at crappie point.

Catfish are crazy for them.
