They continue the race through out the night from San Marcos down to the coast.

I've read the stories and you have to be in some really good shape to make the trek.
Dehydration is what takes a lot of competitors out early. I've heard about the hallucinations and vomiting that is pretty common, so I guess your mileage may vary.
