For whatever reason I can never get my hands on some cut up carp or shad so I have to use what is available. Where I fish the most abundant options for cut bait are the bluegill, perch and sunfish. Are those going to work for me or are the main cut bait fish a necessity?

At certain times of the year like late winter, early spring cut perch is good for big blues. Not sure on channels. Hard to beat shad usually. Boat ramps before daylight you can get shad most days.

I know in the ponds around Lubbock that I fish, and even some of the lakes, most of the channel cats I catch are from cut perch. Even the blues seem to like them more than cut shad lol

yes channels will eat perch. I would cut them into smaller pieces than if you were fishing for blues. 1" x 1" x 1/2"

Channels love all types of cut bait. Bluegill and sunfish work well. Channel cats aren't that selective. If it's fresh cut bait they will eat it.

Have you tried any of the punch or dough baits? Some of them are hard to beat for channels.

Perch will definitely work. I use cut perch exclusively, particularly when jugging. Though I would use shad instead but I've never been able to master throwing the doggone cast net.

Yes I use prepared baits alot for channels and it does work most of the time. I was just checking if natural bait wouldn't be a better choice.

Prepared baits to me seem to proudce the best when it comes to channels. In any body of water you will find the best natural bait or cut baits will be whatever there is the most of. Shad is always a must have, but if you can show up with a mixed bag then you should have whatever they are wanting on any given day.

I use them live and they tend to catch the bigger channel cats.
