I'm planning on taking my grandson and his friend 'perch-jerking', that's what my grandpa called it..
as a kid we always dug our own worms,..I know we probably won't do that. Just wonder what everyone
is using that would be ok for a couple of 8-9 year olds, thanks jim

Live crickets are the best for bluegills. Bits of nightcrawlers are the all around best for sunfish because they let you catch a variety of species. But for large bluegills nothing beats live crickets.

Don't fish for em all that much but after following this section over the years I would have to go with worms. Like the "Banker" call em. "The Bait of Champions"!

I love using crickets, just hard to get in my area! Not as messy as worms, but a couple of 8/9 year old kids don't care about messy!

This is standard operating proceedure using a military term. smile

All the other baits mentioned work, but you are mostly chumming the bait stealers.

Worms giterdone!

Just one more cast!

Growing up we had 3 lakes behind us, all the neighborhood kids fished all the time the very best bait we had was either a worm of a small piece of bacon, the bacon was excellent.
