So I have been trying to sell my bass boat since the middle of June. A guy comes over to my house two weeks ago and goes through it with a fine tooth comb. He runs compression tests on each cylinder (which was fine with me). I crank the outboard with a flush device on it and he wants me to put it in forward and reverse. The lower unit is making a clunking noise while the outboard is in gear. I try to explain to him this is normal (for a Mercury with a 4 blade SS prop) since the lower unit is not submerged in water. He wants something in writing from a mechanic that there is nothing wrong with the lower unit. I take the boat to my local mechanic and tell him to check out the lower unit. He calls me the next day and tells me the gears are good, the lube looks good but there is a trace of water in the lube. My mechanic said it will probably last a while. Being the stand up guy I am, I tell him to replace the lower unit seals and install a new water pump since he already has the lower unit off. $400 later everything is good. I call the guy today and tell him I have everything done and he wants to offer me $1000 less than what I am asking. realmad I tell him that I already had a better offer before any of this work was done. His reply is "you better sell it". Are you kidding me? argue I am furious at this point and have to maintain my temper. I never knew that some people are so hard to please. realmad Why didn't he even ask to go for a test ride? A-hole!

Just part of selling a used boat these days. You have to be careful not to put out a prospective buyer too much or you risk losing a sale. There are far too many good used boats out there not to have to put in some effort as a seller. I have sold 3 that I would have sworn the prospective buyer was gonna be flaky when they contacted me. All 3 ended up being some of the easiest transactions I have had as a seller.
Just move on to another buyer and let this guy go beat up on someone else for a deal. At least now you know the L/U is 100% ready.

It will sell. Hang in there.

I understand where you are coming from for sure........When I sold my last Ranger I was living in Paris, TX. I had put it in the Dallas Morning News classifieds; this was way before the internet took over all of that, had a guy call me from the DFW area wanting me to meet him @ Fork @ Lake Fork Marina to test drive it. I drove all the way from Paris and the guy never showed.......If I hadn't already cleaned all my gear out of it I probably would have went fishing.......

Did the prospective buyer agree to buy it for full asking if the mechanic work checked out ok? If not, why did you pay $400 to get work done without the seller asking for it and without an offer from him?

If you had an offer for less than $1k under your asking price, I would've taken that. I think you should nearly always have that much bargaining room.

Sorry, just my $.02 - worth what you paid for it.

Get you a bottom dollar in your mind that you wont take less for it then go to book value and work from there thats what I do.

I don't know what price you are asking, but if it's over 20k you should have more wiggle room. Personally I would have offered anywhere from 8-2k less than asking. If you had an offer 500$ less than asking, you should have sold it!

Nowadays, you have to negotiate. People don't like paying asking price, even if it is a good deal. It is a game and they want to feel like they won. If you are firm on that price, bump it up in the ad so you can negotiate down.

I had a friend that owned a pet store and he told me when something wouldn't sell, he would jack the price up and it would sell right away. People are strange.

Welcome to selling an older boat

I cant tell you how many jack waggons I dealt with when I sold my 2000 cobra

So many people just wasted my time

"I saw this same boat for 2,000 less"
