I am reading his home study course that is 8 volumes for a second time. Today with structure scan and accurate mapping/live mapping can't we strain water using these aids just like he used spoon-plugs and trolling to find fish, unmapped structure, cover on structure, and bottom composition? The foundation to everything he taught is depth and speed control. He said these two controls will solve any fishing situation given there is enough time spent fishing. I am what he called sloppy because i do not throughly(I.E.cover every depth while experimenting with speed) fish structure shallow to the deepest water in the area. He would basically fish the whole lake given enough time but would concentrate on structure that connected shallow water to the deepest water in the area while keeping in mind seasonal movements of fish.

You bring up a good point that with today's advanced electronics, finding the location and depth of bass is no longer the great concern it once was. The "speed" issue (presentation) remains: How do the bass want their meals served at a particular time of day/year? Are they in the mood for "fast food" or a slow sit-down meal?

Hey! With 8 volumes to review, did anything stand out as a tip you had not known or long forgotten?

And, I see McKinney in your address. I have kids up there. Any small lake suggestions nearby? I see that one small lake out toward Allen as I recall.

Brad

Brad, no small lakes that I know are good but I have not had much time to look and fish. I live on the golf club of McKinney course and have not had any luck on the course ponds. Fished 3 or 4 times for not very long at not at prime times during the year.

To all: Tips from Buck: Agree or Disagree? Let me know.
When looking at a contour map find the deepest water in the area not the whole body of water unless it is a pond or very small. Then look for structure that connects the deepest water to shallow water. Then fish it shallow to deep covering 2 feet all the to the deepest water. Always recheck shallows to deep at different times.

A free swimming bottom bumping lure is a spoonpluger's primary tool for finding fish. Need to cover all depths. This remains a principle in all seasons and conditions.

Always shoot the works on structure as described above. This means cover depths with free swimming lure than cover it with a jump type lure shallow to deep.

If not trolling then anchoring is a must in order to easily make the same exact cast after a fish is caught

Play the game to find a school of fish

A fish can be caught just about anywhere at any time on any lure or bait

After 3 to 5 years in the life of a man made lake catching fish for most will we become harder and harder because the bass will eliminate areas not optimal for their survival and develop home areas and migration and feeding routes. Eliminating the majority of the body of water.

Fish of 2 to 2.5 lbs spend the majority of time in the deepest water in the area and typically very inactive to the point they are impossible to catch

I know of Bucks work but have not reviewed it myself.

You read Bill Murphy's book?

A lot of what he said is in the same vein. But he focused on only truly monster bass.

If he caught a fish under 5/6 lbs he would move spots; idea being that small fish and big fish don't use the same areas.

I often wonder the same basic thing you asked; "How would Bill Murphy fish today with all this new tech. he could not have dreamed of.?"

Example he talked about triangulating shore line landmarks to mark spots. That is just one example.

Buck Perry invented the words "structure fishing." Although some of his word usage is dated, his knowledge and to teach are unparralled.
You might be able to find his writings on e-bay----or maybe you could google him.
Fascinating reading for today's serious angler.

Back in the 70's, Dr. Yates started a spoon plugging club at R. Hubbard, they had a picture board on the wall, at then, Rockwall Fishing Marina, now Harbor Bay. Seems like there was a 6lb to 9lb bass was being posted every week, not to mention the numbers of bass they caught. They could catch bass when the others couldn't. I don't know if I agree on everything BP says, but I know his principles were tested at RH and produced a lot of big bass. I'm not big on trolling so I never tried it, but I was tempted many times, after seeing their catches.

buck perry would still be trolling today. why? because of the amount of water you can cover, and much better depth and speed control to trigger bites. yep, big bass are often all to themselves.

one of the biggest mistakes that i see bassers today do is chunk and run. true, tournament fishing time is limited, and one feels the need to gather up what they can. however, there are many that go off and leave a mother load of bass by not going through all the variables of getting their depth and speed dialed in to garner strikes.

when bass are actively feeding, speed control is not much of a factor, but when bass are in a neutral mode, that is when depth and speed control become crucial. always remember that bait size, different vibrations and other things factor into speed perception. do not get stuck in the rut of being one that says i always use a 1/2 jig for example. the bass might want the fall rate of a 1/4. never be afraid to experiment with depth and speed.

In the 60's and 70's here in Texas many of the tournament anglers would set up long drifts when conditions allowed vs trolling... I did it too as a young angler, trolling motors were of poor quality so were the batteries. Many times under powered for the size of our tri hull monsters... Guys like Billy Jack Keener, Mr Barcroft and his wife won many events back then drifting worms, winning the texas state championships... That's some good competition from WAY back... FYI.. Buck would still troll...

If looking for the 8 volume home study course, then check out: www.itainttv.com some very good DVDs on god and sonar there too. This is what I am currently reading

I am surprised no one has said they can use their electronics to find fish faster than a guy trolling.

perhaps by the letter of the law, it could be for a tournament. see nothing wrong with doing it for fun fishing. certainly a great way to get more out of a lure.
