I'm not a lure painter. Thankfully I know how poor my art skills are so it prevents me from starting yet another hobby. BUT I recently bought a black Chug Bug and thought about adding some blue flake paint to it given just about every thread related to what's-your-favorite-soft-plastic-color has black/blue flake running a close second to green pumpkin.
With that in mind, I bought a 1/4 ounce bottle of Testors enamel model paint in blue metallic flake (a huge investment of $2) and thought I would hand brush it straight on the bait in a few places.
So, go ahead, tell how this will or will not work (before I mess up a perfectly good bait).

Don't see why it would be a problem if that gives you more confidence in the bait it sounds like a winner. I would probably use an artist sponge to do you spots. Cut a small piece of the sponge off that has the pattern your looking for. Try testing the pattern out on a piece of cardboard to get it like you want it. Then move on to the bait.
Would love to see some pics of the finished product.

Black Chug Bug has gotta' be one of the All Time Best pond baits. Spots or stripes? For spots use a mop tip brush. For lines use a detail or line scripter brush. Then there's the old "spatter effect" using a toothbrush method. Drop some paint on the brush and flick the paint onto the lure by lightly running your finger over the brush. Practice first, to get your aim down.....its pretty messy so don't do it at the kitchen table . Testors enamel...sometimes it flakes off pretty easily other times you can't get it off with dynamite.

Thank you guys for your input.
Brad, tell me more about this artist sponge. Where can I get one. Would a regular household sponge or wallpaper sponge work?
Boisarc, the spatter effect has me intrigued. I may give that a test run on cardboard...OUTSIDE. lol. And I'm hoping the Testors is dynamite-proof.

After the paint dries then you can brush on 2 part epoxy over it to seal it. That is what I uses when I put the ghost strip on my spooks.

You can get the sponge at hobby lobby, possibly walmart in the craft section. It will be alot more textured than most other sponges. The toothbrush splatter isn't a bad idea either.

Mr. Harper, thank you for the epoxy info. If I manage to get a result I actually like, I'll try to preserve it with the epoxy. Will I need to slow rotate the lure to get an even finish? I don't have that equipment, but I might be able to come up with a suitable temporary solution.
Brad, I'll check on those sponges next time I'm in Wally World or some other craft-type store. About the pics, maybe. You guys are at such a different level than me that I'd likely shy away from posting anything I do.
For those of you that use an airbrush, is metallic paint available for that process? And do any of you use it?
Again, you guys have been very helpful.

Yes metallic and glitter paints are available, I spray a bunch of paints with metallic and glitter alot other option would be adding glitter to your devcon epoxy for the top coat/sealer. You can buy what ever color glitter you want to use in the top coat at most craft stores, but it's not fine enough to spray though a airbrush.
Basscat dad is the master at glitter epoxy topcoats.

There are many different types of 2 part epoxy. Ideally you'd want a 30 minute epoxy like Devcon 2 ton epoxy or BSI 30 minute epoxy. You'll want to rotate the lure in your hand for about 5 minutes after using epoxy unless you manage to put on a thin coat. If your first time is anything like mine, you'll put on far too thick of a coat that first time. You should definitely post your before and after results. The people on here can offer excellent feedback to help you the next time you paint a lure. Beware! It is very addicting. I tried for the first time about 2 months ago and there is no looking back now.

Brad, maybe the glitter-in-the-epoxy idea is the route I should go. I'll give it some thought.
Txmedic, thanks for the specifics on the epoxy and lure rotation. And, yes, I'm concerned about getting sucked in to another "hobby". However, I do believe my complete lack of art skills will (hopefully) be a big enough obstacle that I don't overdo this. However, I have a friend that has a SERIOUS tackle addiction. Maybe I could make some money off him...

I am the least artistic person I know. You will enjoy this. If you don't, please send me your friend's phone number.

Not just yet on the friend's number. We'll see after my first experiment. This guy is the reason I went from 4 rod/reel combo's of varying quality (mostly medium to low) to 8 combos of Falcon Lowriders/Curado B's. I may need to get some of that back.

Mpowell....Just a few dont's for you: Don't feed grizzly bears marshmellows with your mouth. Don't tell your wife her mother looks hot in a swimsuit. Don't think you can paint just one lure and quit.
