I got a med/lite 7' Ugly Stick Elite earlier this year and it's a good all around rod for under 50 bucks. Are you looking for jig rods or minnow rods or both? All my minnow rods are cheap bait cast combos by Shakespeare and my main jig rod is a fly rod... I'm sure some other guys will chime in with other brands and set ups..

Want a great rod and reel that will last? You cannot go wrong with an Ugly Stik rod, length of your choice and a Shimano 2000 reel. I have six set up like this to fish with bobbers and jigs and they have lasted me over a year without fault. The reels also have a one handed open bell and release system. Check it out!

ProAngler makes some very versatile rods in 6.5 and 8'. Also have them up to 16'. Kinda depends on how you're going to fish. But for general use, the 6.5 ($46) or 8'($45), shipping included, are good choices paired with a spinning or bait cast reel. You can spend whatever you want on the reel, but a Quantum Optix 10, ($20) at Academy or the H2O Express bait cast are good choices that won't break the bank and will last through lots of use.

Pro Angler and Bonehead are two of the popular rods in use. get (2) 8 foot rods to start with. Add a 10 footer. sometimes you just need the reach around standing timber.
I have pro anger because a dealer is fairly close by.
reels in the $50 price range just fine.
the technique of pulling line off of the reel for crappie fishing has for me, lead to the Abu Silver max baitcaster reel. It has a flipping switch for pulling off line easily without the line getting tangled on the reel.
I know of one guide who uses only baitcasters.
Have found that the lightweight line used can easily get tangled up on a spinning reel, esp on windier days. Baitcaster not immune, but seems to happen much less. However the spinning reel easier to use when you need to cast any distance with the light weights of just a minnow/jig. I am not an awesome crappie catcher, but figure my use of the equipment is about the same as anyone.

Walmart had some shakespeare 7' and 7.5 ' micro series graphite rods, had all my rods stolen out of truck and had to go shopping, bought the 7' in a light action and the 7.5 in an ultra light action paired them up with shakespear under spin closed faced reels, rods were $19 each reels were $13 each, figured just something to keep fishing until I could replace my rods with the good stuff I had. I will say this about them, I like them a lot, this might be my new go to set up, rods are light but plenty of back bone to set the hook jig fishing, one complete set up was cheaper than just one of my other rods, still putting them through some punishment to see if they stand up to some crappie abuse, so far Im not disappointed, if you see these rods on the shelf pick one up you might pleasantly surprised , just my 2 cents and saved a bunch of pennies to boot
