So I traveled to Pompano Beach, FL a couple weeks back to fish the Extreme Kayak Fishing Summer Slam I tournament. First let me say that these events are an absolute blast and it was worth the 2,500 mile round trip drive. I spent a week down there fishing and filming, and I'll be producing a 3-part video series from the trip. I had about 7 species on my list of targets, with sailfish and mahi being #1 and #2, and while I missed a lot of them, #1 and #2 were both knocked off. I'll let the videos share the experience with you guys once they air, but here are some of my favorite photos from the trip. Hope you enjoy.

Summertime, and the livin's easy.

A curious nurse shark comes in for a closer look, about 7-foot.

My first Florida kingfish.

Mahi jump.

Mahi closeup.

Success!

Sailfish do not go quietly.

We have a spectator checking out the fight. Sails always travel in packs.

Sailfish chaos.

Do you even lift, bro?

I might have been a little stoked.

The release.

Robert, that's absolutely insane! I've caught sails before, but it never even occurred to me to try from a kayak. Beautiful fish (all of them!). Thanks for sharing the outrageous pics!

That looks awesome. I am heading to Florida for the first time in a couple of weeks. Sailfish and Mahi are the tops on my list also. Tarpon would be up there as well. Could you share a bit about what you caught the sail on, how deep, etc? Thanks for sharing.

Great pics! Brings back a lot of good memories. I think that was the last tournament I fished before moving back to Texas. It was the first realoffshore kayak tournament of any kind in south Florida, at the time. Glad to see how much it has grown.

I'm posting up the Part 1 video in a different thread right now. Check it out, it'll give you good insight. Depths from 100' to 300' are prime spots. Sailfish will be shallower, mahi deeper on weed mats TYPICALLY. But I got a mahi in 70', which is rare, but you never know. Once you get to about 50', drop a bait out.
