I have a 12 volt 45 lb thrust TM on my Tracker Pro Crappie, and I need to replace the trolling battery.

Are the newer battery options (gel, etc.) worth it over traditional water cell lead/acid batteries?

Yes there is a better option at least for me. I got tired of having to refill lead acid batteries and having some messes so I bought AGMs 4 years ago and haven't looked back. I usually bought new lead acids every 4 years or less. I'm hoping these AGMs will go for at least 6 years.

For the 12V 45# trolling motor, a 27 series battery is fine, if you fish for long hours, go to a group 29 or 31 (same battery except for post configuration). I lead acid is less expensive in the long run.
